Oxbridge doesn't do practical degrees. That's not a good or bad thing, it's just a fact. Their purpose is as academic institutions. So CS is theoretical. It's like there's a huge difference between an MBA and a masters in business, one is a practical degree taught with case studies and for people with experience, the other is an academic degree for people looking to do research into business. That's why we suck at CS, as we do at practical engineering (engineering here is applied maths). But academically, it's amazing.

It's also why Oxbridge account to 2 of the top 3 ranked universities in the world. The tutorial system and the selectivity mean it's brilliant at creating academics and people who can argue. It does mean there are places better for some things though. CS definitely, I'd even argue for most applied sciences (bar human sciences at Oxford, which is amazing).

Equating intelligence with academic excellence is only one 'definition' of intelligence. Some highly intelligent people from non-academic backgrounds are superb problem-solvers in the real world, and create real value in the economy with their practical cerebral skills.

Improving people's living standards or advancing the forces of production in this way can be far more valuable, useful, and 'intelligent' to the real world than any amount of academic w@nkery.

Um... that's why there's such a focus on ability to debate and argue, both in writing and orally. It's also why most of our politicians went to Oxford. If you want to look at impact on the world, have a quick wiki for Oxford and Cambridge alumni, you'll be a little surprised at many of them Plus employers here take the idea that they can teach the practical skills, what they want are extremely intelligent people to build from.

The university is an ivory tower (indeed the phrase was invented to describe Oxford, All Souls in particular), but the students just happen to be the best and the brightest. Of the few people here who took SATs, for one reason or another (not many, but I know a good 10 or so), I don't know a single person who got less than 1550, nor dropped a single grade at A level.

I disagree. In fact, in my experience such students who are so very academically excellent can barely tie their shoelaces, **** a guy, or figure out how to efficiently grocery shop.
