If all we had to worry about were heads of state (and heads of govt, generally more important), our public diplomacy situation would be shiny-happy. Mubarak likes us. The king of Jordan likes us. We're going to have a pro-US PM in France soon. Weve got Merkel in Germany. Brown wont be much worse than Blair. Theres Harper in Canada. We have friendly heads of govt from Morocco to Tunisia, and even Libya, to some extent.

Yet you and I know our public diplomacy is well, troubled. Cause you know the peoples, the streets, matter. Maybe not so much as some say, but they do. So that would be the question.

They're accusing him of closing his eyes to all the corruption associated with the mayor while campaigning for reform. This stuff is priceless. One wannabe was quoted as saying "this just proves he doesn't have what it takes to be President" The fact that he's backing a white candidate over a black candidate (not that any of them probably have any chance at all) is a slap in the face of all black people.

      Let the games continue.

      More popcorn please.
Maybe Dick Dailey is still resentful against woman pols. Whatever happened to old Jane whats her face?

                • Ollie - it's a troll thread, of course. And it would matter to some people in much the same way that it mattered to some people that JFK was a Catholic.

It does seem like one has to have been (conciously) a Muslim for one to be considered apostate. I wonder if there is an age tagged to that. Age of majority?

Becuase people can vote based upon anything that they want to. Including the faith of a politician. That is why most are, at least on the surface, Christian. I mean, that is just identity politics.

Dunno who you've been talking to but it's really doubtful that the "people on the streets" really care that a Christian American President had Muslim grandparents one one side of his family. If anything, it'll be an affirmation of the tolerance and diversity in our society, i.e. a good thing for public diplomacy. There's something sort of like a confirmation.

                                A. If Obama was never himself a muslim, I too doubt it would matter.
                                B. Even if he HAD been a muslim, and converted to Christianity, and thus was an apostate we could well decide that it would be wrong to bow to the sensitivities of parts of the muslim world rather than do what we think is right. I never said otherwise. That does not mean there would not be an effect. Note, I personally have reservations about electing a Jew as President any time in the near future.
