Stop twisting around, Ned. You keep jumping back and forth between saying Americans won't vote for someone who they think is Muslim and you won't vote for a fanatical Muslim terrorist.

What's your stance here? Do you have a problem with Obama because you think Americans wouldn't vote for him, or because you wouldn't want a dirty raghead in office?

L, I think you are making my point by deliberately misunderstaning what I am saying. People raised the issue of Mel's father's anti-Semitism to suggest that Mel was anti-Semitic. People raised the issue of Arnold's father's NAZIism for essentially the same reason.

People are raising the issue of Obama's name and his father's religion for the same purposes.

I have stated that I would not vote for a Muslim because I know that most Muslims and I do not share the same views on Israel and Western culture. I would not trust the politician even if he said that his views were different.

I don't know very much about Obama except that he is proud of his heritage. That gives me pause for obvious reasons. Not even Arnie or Mel went so far as saying they were proud of their fathers even though they did not denouce their political views.

I don't have to cross the Obama bridge just yet. The Dems first have to decide on their candidate. Perhaps this will be an issue in their campaign. It can be raised in very subtle ways. Hillary, for example, could raise it simply by emphasizing her own support of Israel, implying that Obama was soft on this issue.

But the issue is out there now and is being discussed.

This pretty much ends the debate. You have an opinion on him which is based on whatever you want it to be based on, and your opinion's not going to change. It's a shame, really, that you won't give a candidate the opportunity to state a platform or a set of beliefs, but I guess that's just the way it is.

L, How does saying I would not vote for a Muslim translate into I would not vote for Obama? I said I was suspicious of his views because of his background. But as far as I know, he is not a Muslim and may not hold the views that most Muslims hold.

BTW, what are Obama's views on Israel?

Frankly, I don't know. I know very little about Obama at this point. I'm sure it would be fairly easy to look up on the net, though.

You're right, I jumped too far there. But let me ask you this: What would it take to convince you that Obama was not secretly working for al-qaeda? What could he do or say that would distance himself enough from his terrorist father so that you would consider him a true, arab-hating American?

L, if an issue arose where support of Israel was critical to the decision and Obama came down on Israel's side, I would be convinced and possibly supportive of the man, all other things being equal.

Any politician running for high office in the United States must at the very least pretend to be religious (edit: mainstream candidate). I'm not saying his faith isn't real - it probably is. But if you're looking for an openly atheistic candidate, look elsewhere.
