So say the coup leaders. That absolves them of the murder. I don't believe them.
As I said in the post that followed that one, Allende's own physician saw him place the gold-plated AK-47 in his mouth and killed him self.
The physician and others adivsors stayed in the room 'till the firemen arrived (firemen where the first in entering La Moneda, even before the militaries... kind of cowards right? )

He will have an official funeral as former Commander in Chief on Tuesday, not as former President. Perhaps the confusion of the media is because the Government didn't decrete National Mourning.

Good riddance, sorry it didn't happen sooner. He had one of my friend's fathers tortured (was studying engineering in Chile at the time and Pinochet's thugs came down hard on the universities).

A murderer, an assassin. Unfortunately he didn't pay for his brutalities.
                    One of those crimes:

Víctor Lidio Jara Martínez (September 28, 1932 – September 15, 1973) was a Chilean educator, theatre director, poet, folk singer/songwriter, and political activist. He was prominent in the development of the “Nueva canción Chilena”/New Chilean Song movement, that acquired considerable prominence during the socialist government of Salvador Allende. His tragic and brutal murder shortly after the September 11, 1973 coup in Chile, transformed Jara and his music into a symbol of struggle against military oppression and injustice across Latin America.
                    ……………………………………………………
On the morning of September 12, Jara was taken, along with thousands, as a prisoner to the Chile Stadium (renamed the Estadio Víctor Jara in September 2003). Many of them were tortured and killed there by the military forces. Jara was repeatedly beaten and tortured, resulting in the breaking of bones in his hands and upper torso. Fellow political prisoners have testified that his captors mockingly suggested that he play guitar for them as he lay on the ground. Defiantly, he sang part of a song supporting the Popular Unity coalition. He was murdered on September 15 after further beatings were followed by being machine-gunned and left dead on a road on the outskirts of Santiago. Soon after, his body was taken to a city morgue. Before his death, he wrote a poem about the conditions of the prisoners in the stadium, the poem was written on a paper that was hidden inside a shoe of a friend. The poem was never named, but is commonly known as Estadio Chile.

Chile was a country on the brink of civil war, irreconcilably divided between left and right, in total economic collapse with massive unemployment and inflation at about 100%+ per month when General Pinochet intervened to rescue the country. He was ruthless and murderous about it, but there were NO GOOD options left for the country after years of divisive rule by Allende.
After his rule, the divisions are much more limited, democracy works well again now, the economy has outshone the rest of South America easily, so apart from his human rights record, the country has done extremely well. It is probable that there was no other way to achieve a result as good as this, whatever his critics say.
He done what he believed was best for his country in the most extreme of circumstances, I will not condemn him for that, but just wish some of the abuses did not have to come with it.

You mean he was forced to kill and torture? That's stupid.

Great part of his critics is pretty dead. Has been for years. He killed them…

I cannot understand this kind of statement. Judging by that, with these criteria, Hitler was just trying to recover Germany… He just did the same.

What part of “mass murder” did you not understand?
