Eh, FDR's last years were pretty crappy.

Not really but they will probably gonna include one for the thousands of supporters. Anyway I'm pretty sure that will be quite short and extremely guarded to avoid clashes between them and the other thousands of people that will celebrate the day.

And would the president have to be there to "mourn" Pinochet?
Nope. President Bachelet doesn't have to mourn him, although in the latests days rumours indicates that she probably will do a low profile official mourning activity for the former president (which, if this happens, will blow my mind!) but wouldn't go to the funeral.

edit: The Government's Emergency Comittee was reunited in President's Bachelet house. The Sec. of Defense Vivianne Blanlot and Sec. of Press Ricardo Lagos have left Bachelet's house and now are heading to the Presidencial Palace of La Moneda to give the first public statement, regarding if it's declared National Mourning or not.

If you can't say something good about the dead, you shouldn't say anything.

              Pinochet is dead.

              Good.

Good he had to live his last years with the knowledge he was about to be tried and only his poor health kept him out of the courts.

Every nation saved from communism is today happier and richer than ex-communists. And less people were killed in it. Pinochet and his supporters did some horrible things, but the story is not black & white.

As opposed to Pinochet, who did.

So Heresson says you should not be happy someone is dead...

Then attacks Allende, who is dead thanks to Pinochet...

I wonder if he will make the same statement when Castro dies and people here celebrate that. My guess, He will also be adding dance smilies in that thread.

No. Castro is funny. Recently he became a very pius catholic.
I'm not saying killing Allende was fine.

Allende wasn't killed, he committed suicide with the AK-47 Castro gave him as a gift, when he took office.

The Government declared that there is not going to be national mourning and only military HQ will have their flag at mid high for respect of the former Commander in Chief. The Government also declared that the funeral wouldn't be for the "President Pinochet" but for the "General Pinochet", so President Bachelet wouldn't mourn him officially. OTOH, Viviane Blanlot, Defense Secretary will have to go to the funeral.
