Response to medication is NOT diagnostic for ADD, for other mental disorders, or, AFAIK, for physical disorders.

In any case, even if he was misdiagnosed doesnt prove poor parenting.
It doesn't prove it, but the fact that the mother wanted to blame ADHD over her parenting skills speaks volumes.

So many parents can't control their kids and then get them diagnosed as ADHD so they can be put on ritalin and vegetated.

I don't have any kids myself, obviously, but we covered this in my child psychology and developmental psychology courses. This seems like a textbook case to me.

The parenting is so bad everything is out of her control. She tries to fix it with ADHD and it doesn't work, so now she's turning to the police.

      ADD != ADHD.

Asher has a point in that they are bad parents. The kid should have never gotten to this point. But at this point, I think it's too late. You can't wait till the kid is like 10 or 11 (not sure of his exact age) and then start disciplining him. He should have been disciplined all along. The parents are making the police be the bad guys, because they can't do it themselves.
Agreed that the child shouldn't get this old without learning some discipline. But we don't have all the details so it's hard to know for sure.

Second. (and not really relevant. )
There are those kids that are find until they're teenagers when hormones and thougts of rebellion drastically changes things. We had some teens in our neighborhood that were prim and proper growning up and their parents were praised for what a good job they were doing. THEN THEY TURNED INTO ALL KNOWING REBELIOUS teenagers. Does that make their parents incompetent? They eventually grew our of it as most YOUNGER people do, learning that they didn't know all the secrets of the universe, and turned into respected member of the community. But anyone looking at those few years would not judge their parents kindly.

What do you think, were those parents good or bad parents?

Here's another case where a troublesome kid just can't stay out of trouble. Fortunately, the parents in this case were so desperate to find a way to control him, that they did!

They used a cage to scare him straight.

It certainly makes me a lot closer to an expert than somebody who doesn't understand the psychology behind child development and doesn't like cops who arrest drunk drivers...

Not very many Indians can afford to pay doctors (in bed with pharmaceutical companies) to tell them that their kid's bad behavior is not the result of bad parenting and that all they need to do to get their kids to act better is have them take some magic pills.

Not every kid with ADD is badly behaved, by any means. That you dont even know that speaks volumes to your expertise on the subject.

You're laughable when you keep taking that out of context. My point was that in the old days, the police were more part of the community. The didn't wield a heavy stick. They didn't penalize you for your whole life for some childish indiscretions. They didn't shoot people first. Kids didn't learn to hate cops and all authority. They actually respected them. I think that's a much better thing than the way it is today. Yes, hopeless optimism.

And for the record I think drunk drivers should be arrested, but I was trying to point out that times were different then. Heck there were drive through liquer stores back then, and I certainly wouldn't support those today. The laws were enforced differently then because the times were different. Some for the better and obviously some for the worst. But I think you have a much better community when the police are respected and not seen as the enemy.

And raising children will teach you more than reading from a book any day of the week. It will teach you that you don't know everything. Reading from books seems to teach you the oposite. (and i probably read most of those same books in hopes of giving me clues to being a good parent, and most of them were ivory tower crap) Some were pretty good though. But experience is always the best teacher.

                          • And for the record. I was never brought home for driving intoxicated.

And when the police bring you home at 2 in the morning making sure that no one got hurt on the way. Your parents made sure you were punished considerably. Not by the current nambi pambi standards. Again I support corporal punishment (not beatings) as a acceptable tool for parenting.

Definitely not an expert. But, I had a friend who was diagnosed with ADD long before it was a common phenomenon. Maybe 16 years ago. Man, he would get this crazy look in his eyes and you knew something ****ed up was about to happen. Good times...

His parents were ****ing *******s though. Pretty sure the problem was them, not him.
