If the story is a hoax, the situation isn't, because it exists every day in many homes.

Just because Asher says we are 'special' isn't necessarily a good thing.
These things happen just as often up here as down in the states.

Hell, I know that. I don't mean to insult Canadians in general, Ben. Sorry if it came across that way.

The United States has many problems with parenting.
On the one hand we don't want the state to control how we parent, but then we rely on the state to send a message to our children that we are serious.
On the one hand we believe in punishing unruly children but we also frown on depriving them of nice luxury items in spite of their behavior.
On the one hand we want to believe that we are good parents, but when evidence points to the contrary we like to find excuses anywhere and everywhere.

For instance, if my son was uncontrollable, getting expelled, etc...I wouldn't buy him gifts, such as a, oh I don't know, video game system. Hello...
Bingo- buying VIDEO GAMES to kids (attention deficit= PC-crap-disease invented by doctors for selling more pills) is not a good idea
I will never understand why some people on Apolyton find you so clever. You're predictable, mundane, and a google-whore and the most observant of us all know this. Your battles of "wits" rely on obscurity and whenever you fail to find something sufficiently obscure, like this, you just act like a 5 year old. Congratulations, molly.
I think his mother should pursue this fully putting her son through our entire justice system effectively ruining his life. That'll learn 'em!

Do we actually have enough background info on the parenting to make a full and informed judgement?
I was brought up in a very strict regime and rarely got into serious trouble, but I do remember finding and reading a comic annual in advance of christmas one year. As it ultimately spoilt the present for me, I soon learned of my error without the need for either a smack or a jail sentence.
It does seem ludicrous for the state to get involved, on the face of it. The damn kid should have no presents as a punishment - but it seems to me that any kind of discipline these days can get logged as abuse and grounds to have children taken away.
I think this case is about much more than this child or this parent - it's about the complete confusion these days as to the right way to bring a child up. It seems that the required discipline is almost illegal - leading to impossible problems.
All in all, one of many reasons why I have a firm policy of avoiding parenthood.
invented by doctors why are people so quick to think that doctors ivented ADD but don't apply the same to other psychological conditions? is it because ADD poses the problem (albiet false) that it can excuse certain undesirable behavior? (he's just lazy, he has no discipline, he can't concentrate on anything for more than 5 minutes)
at the end of the day, people with ADD or without are measured by what they accomplish and there is no social acceptance of ADD that compensates for that.

1. Most Americans dont need the state to help them parent, but arent wildly libertarian about sane state interventions. Some are (wildly libertarian that is). Few in either camp rely on the state to send messages as this mom did. Thats why it was a national news story, you know? Man bites dog, that sort of thing.
2. Many folks dont believe in punishing unruly children. The whole liberal anti-behavioralist school. Those who DO believe in punishments often use denial of luxury items as a "negative consequence" Of course some folks have a very odd views of whats a luxury and whats a necessity, but not most.
3. That probably applies to most human beings about most everything. "We like to believe we are good (employees, employers, citizens, spouses, Zen Buddists, proprietors of Civ Sites) but when evidence points to the contrary we like to find excuses anywhere and everywhere. "
