Go adopt a child, come back, and then talk.

The son isn't locked in a dungeon. He was at the station for about an hour. Whoopdee****ingdo.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm a father of two boys. Not in that age yet, however.
I'm also not saying that my children can't "detract from the right way" since that doesn't solely depend on the parents, but for sure I won't need police to restore domestic discipline.
If my child did the same, I'd talk to the great-granmother and give away the Game Boy to some caritative institution. Bye bye, Game Boy. Trust me, I'm raising my children with such logics. If you repeat the same idiocy twice, face the consequences. And the consequence should better be related to the incident, that's what every good pedagogic will tell you. It works.

Especially if your child suffers from ADD, it's probably better to talk and relate more with your children when problems become really bad than to resort to an outside institution. That's missing the very core of the problem. Even if that would mean cuts in your career. If your child has serious physical problems, everyone expects parents to take care of them even at expense of their own private life, yet if a child comes into serious mental problems because of whatever, few regard this as necessary.
How that child behaved and how the mother reacted seems two faces of the same coin, showing why things are as they are.

They eventually grew our of it as most YOUNGER people do, learning that they didn't know all the secrets of the universe, and turned into respected member of the community. But anyone looking at those few years would not judge their parents kindly.

What do you think, were those parents good or bad parents?
Non-environmental factors left aside: it's not always fair to look to the parents when it comes to a person's development. A lot also depends on the peer-group and essentially anyone who comes into contact with the person in question.

        • What I'd like to see is why you all think this kid is so out of control.

'Cause the police thought it was valid enough to lock him up, perhaps? Otherwise, they would have laughed it off and told kooky mom to get back home.

Though I am enjoying the childless Asher is desperately flailing trying to tell rah, who has kids, how to raise children. Of course he comes out in favor of the child! *gasp* I wonder if Ozzy will also!

          • Having kids apparently affects good judgement.

Using the police to do your parenting isn't acceptable parenting.

Do you think that if you call up the police and said you want to press charges against someone the police have to go out and arrest him no matter how silly it is?

If police thought it was silly, they could have easily let him go.

                    That's a pretty stupid system.

Of course, this is avoided in Canada in that charges are pressed by the officers, not civilians...

                    • The cops in the US are more efficient in that in middling type of crimes where there isn't much harm, they'll just keep the guy in jail for a night unless someone is pissed enough to press charges. Prevents wasting of court's time when a guy is busted for trespassing but the owner of the land doesn't want to press charges.

Seems to me like it's a system ripe for exploitation.

It also has the downsides of that in cases of domestic violence, the woman doesn't always press charges. You call this "efficient", I call it a disgrace.

                            • No, because the charges don't stick as we don't hold people indefinitely a la the USA.

It helps in situations where family members may not want to press charges, eg. domestic violence.
