Mom has son arrested for allegedly playing with present before Christmas
“In a democracy, I realize you don’t need to talk to the top leader to know how the country feels. When I go to a dictatorship, I only have to talk to one person and that’s the dictator, because he speaks for all the people.” - Jimmy Carter
Back in the old days this wouldn't have even been worthy of an article.
Quite a few parents back then would have there kids mock arrested and thrown in a cell to try to scare them a touch. The cops always didn't mind doing it if it would help straighten the kid out. Of course these were the same cops that would drive you home if they caught you driving and drinking. Not anymore. I will admit that we really respected policemen back then. Something has been lost.
Our uncle (who was a cop) did it to us once. It was no big thing and it's something we laugh about now, but may have been a real good thing.
Granted today things are a bit different, but the concept is not that bad of an idea. I don't consider it waste of taxpayer money if some good comes out of it. It may keep the kid from getting arrested for real when he's older thereby save the taxpayers big bucks.

WTF?
They let people get away with drinking and driving, thus you respect them?

A father isn't mentioned. While a mother can raise a child alone, facts prove a 2 parent home is the ideal.
They're not rich. They're not even "comfortable".
The grandmother had this toy on layaway for months.
They can't afford thing like a new computer every year that meets the new standards for game graphics.
It was sure to make the local news, which is good.
With it getting bigger coverage, a doctor who knows about ADD may see it and help the family out.
There's a lot more to it than saying she's a for**** mother.
Surprised you don't see these facts.
A little surprised, not a whole lot.

Blaming this on her being a single mother is a copout. Her grandmother lives right nextdoor. It sounds like there's lots of people around to help out.
Any mother who presses charges against her son for opening a christmas present early is a for**** mother, pretty much by definition. I don't care for her reasoning nor your oldtimer reasoning for it, it's an unacceptable abuse of the justice system.
If she wasn't poor, I'd like her to be sued for all legal costs involved with the matter.
I bet she's the kind of woman who calls the cops when the fastfood restaurant won't make her a hamburger, like that lady from a few years ago...

It's kind of hard to explain to this generation.
Back then the cops almost knew everyone in town. Kids would be kids. If you did something stupid they brought you home to your parents and let them discipline you. And usually it didn't happen again. The first time you did something stupid, they didn't give you a record they actually tried to make sure it wouldn't happen again. As a result, you didn't think every cop was pig that was out to hassle you, you actually thought they were there to serve and protect. They saved their harrassment for those constant repeat offenders. I know it sounds kind of silly but it actually worked. And we didn't have cops shooting people in questionable circumstances. There was usually a discussion first. I know, I know, different times.

Perhaps this kind of arrest can only make sense in a nation where petty lawsuits are abundant and parents are so inept that they want the government to raise their kids (censorship, for instance).
To any sane person, this is ridiculous.

The mother said that her son was found in the last year to have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but that his medicine does not seem to help.
Absolutely. Children with attention deficit hyperactivity generally are parented to the extreme.
If a mom resorts to calling the police for not being able to hide away a game boy it's all the bloody child's problem. Lock that punk away for sxome time. If it happens three times, jail him for life.
Howdy.

I don't need to have a child to know that calling the cops when he opens a christmas present early is unacceptable.

Err, it's not over, Sloww. You do realize he's still got charges against him.

Just for background information.... How many kids do you have Asher? And no, I don't think that automatically makes your opinion on this meaningless, I'm just curious.

I seriously hope they mean Gameboy Advance. Who buys a gameboy anymore? Jail would be more fun.

Err, it's not over, Sloww. You do realize he's still got charges against him.
Which are dependant on the great grandmother pressing charges.
In a related story my father had to press charges against his own 20 yr grandson as he ripped off my dad $2000 worth of tools and had them fenced for his heroine habit.
Sometimes the kid is beyond help and a run in with the law is what the doctor orders. Waterboarding is too good for them I tells ya.

I'm glad she called the cops instead of maybe beating the kid. Only a parent can really understand a situation with an uncontrollable child involved. Fortunately I only had to deal with this a few times with my daughter. Just because it happened a few times didn't automatically make me a for**** parent. My daughter turned out quite well (so far anyway)
This does sound a bit over the top, but not knowing the whole story and history, I don't deem myself godlike enough to pass judgement on her. But it must be nice to be young and know everything with such certainty.
I miss those days.
