  • I'd just finished reading the 2001, 2010, and 3001 books by Clarke when it came time to choose a username. I've got a think for nigh-omnipotent cosmic powers so the starchild was an obvious choice.

And I think part of me liked the irony that the next evolutionary leap in mankind would be in the form of a gay teen unlikely to have kids.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.
    -Richard Dawkins

      • No, I didn't take mine from "Alien". I was reading Conrad's novel at the time.

        • Mine's a derivation of "Scribble," the main character and narrator in Jeff Noon's very weird science fiction novel Vurt, which I'd just finished before stumbling into Apolyton.

Jutland is an Avalon Hill game based on the famous naval battle. However, it's played over an area so big that no board can hold it. So it's played on the floor, with the players using "range finders" to move their ships. Often, even the floor of normal rooms weren't large enough, which is the reference for playing the game in a gymnasium.

                    • I started out way back when as DrDanger ( I starred in basketball in high school mid 1970's, lettered and helped lead my team to some conference championships, during the day of DrJ-Julius Irving). I have allways enjoyed instigating in a friendly way, started doing that here on Apolyton when the Great Apolyton's Horse called me a Troll and for real had never heard that in relation to online postings, loved it because of what a Troll lives like, attacking unsuspecting passerby's, and asked for a name change.

I came to be Grandpa Troll during December 2003 when I asked Ming to add Grandpa because I was celebrating my first Christmas as a granddad and thus have been ever since

I am pretty harmless and have tried to tone it down and as long as my meds stay functioning, I should be ok!!

                              • My husband called me Cartimandua, acknowledging the fact that I am the queen of all I survey. The name literally means "Sleek Pony", but we probably shouldn't go into detail about why that applies.
