How can the Wii be at all immersive if the games admittedly look like ass?

    They do?

And even a text-based game can be immersive. Or a book. Ever heard of those? Some of us don't need 1080p to be immersed...

      Absolutely.

Low-res textures, jagged lines, non-widescreen support, low polygonal characters...

Nearly every review you read, including Zeldas, comment on the disappointing visuals. The gap will only widen as more people get HDTVs and Xbox 360 and PS3 games push more envelopes graphically.

People can already download a 40MB Xbox Live Arcade game for $6 that looks better than any Wii game (Small Arms -- the SSBM like game).

Text-based games and books can certainly be immersive because they call upon the imagination. Bad graphics do not such thing.

I was playing textbased games since 1991, FWIW.

Zelda is essentially just a GC game (I've already stated my complaints against the game) and as for the other games, I'd say they aren't any better or worse than the usual fare of launch titles. Nintendo dropped the ball by not ensuring it had a more proper game available to showcase the Wii's controls AND graphics IMO, but like I've said, the 360 has had over a year to bring out some good titles, something it is just now accomplishing.

And the GC is capable of better graphics than some current Wii titles are showcasing. Just like how the Xbox was capable of better graphics than most of its games had. Just like the 360 is capable of better graphics than many of its current games did.

WRT Shadowrun: It's an old franchise, but from what I hear the Xbox game is VERY loosely based on the original, and the fanboys aren't happy. They're quite vocally unhappy, in fact. The people who currently own the rights to SR have publicly distanced themselves from the project. So if it succeeds, it'll likely be on its own merits rather than out of any sort of name recognition. I know this mostly due to spending some time with the Genesis version recently and wondering why they didn't try it again; it turns out the original series is considerably more lame (true PnP style), and the Xbox version bears little resemblance to either except insofar as there are elves and dwarves with guns.

Asher, my point is that the Wii is not necessarily aiming for traditional gamers, ie the sort of people who care about stellar graphics and crap. To more normal, social people, looking a little silly while swinging a stick around is a small price to pay for a good time. They won't feel nearly as silly as they would hunched over a plastic lump hammering buttons and getting hand cramps. That's just a little too dungeon-troll for a lot of people. And while DDR was a short-lived fad, sports, drinking and sex also involve looking ridiculous to have fun. And those are all here to stay.

The same argument was used in 2001 with the Gamecube, too. Only it had good graphics (for the time) and a lower price.

Eh, Wii's still cheaper than the competition. And the Wiimote is real innovation--wasn't the Gamecube just a beefed up N64, more or less?

I admit that Nintendo is quite capable of screwing this up. The DS isn't doing too well, I hear, and that had (less, but some) potential. But the Wii is a far cry from, say, Virtual Boy. Mind you, a used wad of toilet paper would be better than Virtual Boy, so that's not saying much, but the Wii has some real potential.

                    • The DS isn't doing well? I thought it was completely owning the PSP.

                      • Oh, that's right, it was the PSP. My bad, Kuci. I wonder, when is the "XNugget Portable Xtreme" going to come out and challenge Nintendo for the handheld crown?

                            • Elok, Asher posted some numbers of console sales in another thread. I know you've been corrected; this is more an FYI. Between the 13th and 19th of November, apparently the DS sold almost 50,000 units more than all the other consoles combined. The next week, the DS had doubled that lead.

Nintendo's printing money with that thing.

                              • Yes, but it's just a stupid gimmick which doesn't affect the way games are played. It'll go the way of the Power Glove soon enough! Right? RIGHT???
