Discounting the continued failure of the GOP government, one of the biggest vectors turns out to be Michael J. Fox. Ten percent of both Republicans and independents who've seen the add are now saying they will switch their votes to Democrats because of the stem cell issue. That's just amazing.

Canada is a rarity, some of which is caused by the anomolous situation of the Quebec party. How many more countries with first-past-the-post elections have three or more viable parties?

The NDP also plays a strong role in Canadian politics. But to answer your question, a lot of them. The UK and India, for instance, come to mind. Many (most?) former British colonies are FPTP, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than two viable parties in most of them. The US is more or less an anomaly.

We're not all that unusual. Japan has a two party system, as do many Latin American countries. Most Western countries are effectively two party systems, since it's generally one of two parties which control the government.

Huh? Japan has only one governing party, and more than two significant parties. It's definitely not a two party system. Incidentally, their Diet is elected partially by PR and partially by FPTP.

I didn't say that it is a single party state. I said politics is dominated by a single party. And it is, when that party controls basically 2/3 of the Diet. And has typically dominated the body. Again, the point I was making is that it is not a similar system to ours in that the "second party" is a lot less and "third parties" are a lot more viable.
