Probably, but that question is so vague that I'm not sure what you mean by it.

Can you, Slowwhand, say that you have tested your own beliefs in such a manner?
There have been times when my faith was put to the test. That's normal. The Bible writes of Jesus Christ questioning in this manner. If I was the Son of God, I feel quite sure I'd wonder why I was being subjected to a nailing to a cross.
It's not wrong to question, particularly. Desperation is what does that most times. Haste in actions. Not thinking.
This morning, there was a suicide in a condo down from us. We're in 23A. This happened in 18A. Why, I have no idea. Desperation can certainly be attributed to it.
You have to have faith. Without faith, you've lost.
May not answer your question, but it's all I have to offer.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Notice that in all my years of Poly (or rather in the three years that I've held to my current ideology) I've never once tried to convince anyone here of what I believe. In fact, I've never even really expressed what I do, in fact, believe.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. I know the reasons I believe, but I'm not one to say I have all the answers. Doubtful that anyone does.

I think what I'm asking you Sloww is this.
When you question your faith, do you look at it as something that you can overcome to affirm your faith, or are you realistically considering the possibility that you should abandon everything you believe and take up a new idea that may hold more water?Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

See. No. That's the thing. Most people only quesiton what they believe when it isn't working. I'm sure you've suffered through many hardships throughout your long life, and I'm sure you've questioned your faith as a result.
But... but people feel better if they... pass the test. If you can weather the storm of your life, and still hold on to what you believe, then this will obviously help you get through things. It is rewarding to have what you believe reaffirmed in such a manner.
This is different from questioning what you believe for the sake of intellectual curiosity.
I won't deny that when I began to question what I believed, it was because I was deeply and nearly suicidally depressed. But once I set myself down that path, it became routine for me to question things.
Nowadays, when I am taking a deep long look at what I believe, it's not because I feel threatened by something that might not be right; I do it because I cannot abide believing something that is wrong. I question my beliefs because of the same intellectual honesty that Whaleboy talked about in his OP.
I test myself not to see if I can pass the test, but because I feel that I have an obligation to rid myself of wrong beliefs.Last edited by Lorizael; October 16, 2006, 14:43.Click here if you're having trouble sleeping.

So you expect people to question things as much, or more, when all is great?
Doubtful. That's not the nature of a human being.
Good things happen, they don't question why nearly as often as when things aren't going so well. THEN they wonder why.
I don't think it was ever written that having faith was without trials and tribulations. If they did, they're an idiot.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.
