You'd also have to consider whether all people can easily interface into the more complex societies that are now dominating the Earth. I say this since humans seemed to be more of a pack type animal than a solitary or herd animal throughout our evolution. When you try to squeeze everyone into a more complex society there may be problems with some people not acclimating properly or having some other problem. I am not saying it is the person's fault or a weakness, but it is a complex issue.

Of course it would be, but that's part of the way the disease works. You wouldn't fault a schizophrenic for having the same problems over and over.

Be that as it may, how many times are we expected to continue giving the same advice and having it be ignored? And if a schitz came to 'Poly, would you think any of us could say anything to help him/her with the condition? If we repeated it enough times, would s/he accept that the Pope, the FBI, and the Mooninites from ATHF were not all conspiring against him/her? And if not...is there anything we can say to pull Thorn out of trouble if he wants pity more than genuine help?

A lot of people look down on me, because I live in a 2 bedroom apartment, and am "the help".

They live in a 4 bedroom house, and are "the suits".

Now there are a lot of people who live in a 2 bedroom apartment, and are "the help", but wish they lived in a 4 bedroom house, and were "the suits".

          These people get depressed.

The above rationalization can be applied to many things, expensive cars, hot women or careers of choice.

Am I supposed to feel sorry for them, because they cannot live up to the expectations they held for themselves as children? NO

They need to grow up, and realize, life is not fair.

          Realize, contentment is happiness.

Happiness without contentment is an illusion.

No you're, this is not a symptom of social conditioning.

This is a disease! We dont need to change anything in our society. Our society is perfect; drugs and psychologist are here to be sure, that we do not change anything about how we live. We just need to create more psycholgist and more drugs if we need it!

              Well, D'uhh

Cancer is not a disease, it is a symptom of dietary conditioning.

Asthma is not a disease, it is a symptom of bad spirits which rise from the marshes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Thorn jumping in the bath tub with a toaster wouldn't actually work. Every house built since WW2 has breakers or fuses some where in the house so any surge in power, like from a toaster in the bath tub, would just break one of the circuit breakers.

Chronic depression isn't a purely mental problem, but something that actually alters the brain structure and effects brain chemistry. Depression may not be a traditional illness but it is at least definitely a problem to be fixed.

Just telling them to stop whining, won't actually do anything at least. (and anyone that had made a "I'm depressed" thread on any forum would have seen that message at least a few hundred times already)

The realization that life is unfair do not cause people to go into a lifetime of self-destructive depression. More often than not, people are depressed because their lives truely and utterly suck by no stretch of imagination. Suck as in lack of social contact and support while being (real or imagined) completely helpless in dealing with things that matters. Self-perputating depression is a mixture of powerlessness and self loathing. No one gets chronically depressed if there is something they are doing to right the wrong.

Telling a depressed person to get over it is similar to telling a starving person to get over it.

I don't think there is that much advice we can give, but at least the attention is sort of comforting to the depressed. (or such thread would not exist at all)

I think anyone that makes a thread like this is probably hopelessly isolated to the point where a throw-away random troll is actually significant....

                      .
I'll just hop all over this false analogy.

A starving person cannot, through sheer force of will and understanding, make food appear befor etheir eyes.

However, all it takes for a depressed person to undertand their predicament is to understand their position in life, and what got them there.... in other words, personal responibility.

                      • Just because something is socially caused, doesn't mean it doesn't have a biological affect. The brains of people who are abused develop different from those who aren't, and those changes can be seen in the brain during ann autopsy. Often times, depression has socail causes or could be the response to a personal tregedy. Sometimes, people just have it.

I don't think so. I think it takes a very couragous person. I know I just don't have the balls to do it. I can put the gun in my mouth, but I can't pull the trigger. I just don't have the courage to do so. I'm not sure what stops me exactly.

that's actually the time I started becoming depressed. Up till I was 21 I was pretty happy.
