    • I hope Domenech stays on for at least another two years - he was an inept coach before he became coach of france, and two years at the helm has not diminished his ineptitude at all, he simply got lucky that zidane turned back the clock. that means one less team for switzerland to beat in the euro 2008.

england on the otherhand, its a shame that their inept swede left, he had a real talent for squeezing mediocrity out of his players, and with their stars, england can only get better under the new manager.

      • Don't worry, McLaren is supposed to be just as talented at squeezing out mediocrity

        • Indeed. I'd like to thank the Swiss team for making England look like an exciting team of swashbuckling players, involved in matches filled with incident and interest, and for (amazingly) being even worse at penalties than us.

                • The move more reminds me of Homer Simpson, in that one episode in which he's visiting a zoo and start to head-butt the tour-guider's side, after the example of some animals.

Maybe Zidane was just trying to tell Materazzi he should get of his territorium.

no need to thank us, but I would be a little worried when more than half of my national side plays in the latter stages of the champions league year in and year out and still needs an incredible individual feat to advance in the world cup (not to mention, only senderos and Vogel would make the england squad)

                    • I don't think so - he really only had one great game (vs. Brazil), and only decent performances vs. Spain and Portugal

Were you on drugs when you watched the matches?

You're joking, of course. Steve McLaren is the man who got the England job with Alex Ferguson's CV, having been part of the Ericsson mediocrity for years and whose main accomplishment at Middlesbrough was spending a fortune on a very mid-table side at best. After years of spending, he finally built a squad capable of challenging for minor honours.

I for one will be surprised if McLaren does any better than Ericsson. Martin O'Neill should have had the job.

                          • BTW, checking Wiki, I noticed 10 Italian players managed to score at least once on this WC. The fact that their goal-scores are so dispersed is IMO a testimony to their collective strength.

Did you watch the game with Spain and Portugal? Zidane's MF generalship was a big reason France moved onwards.
