  • When I say five man defence, I mean the forwards coming back to rob sure goals from open men. Oiler centres did it to Cheechoo and Marleau several times in the second round and you've seen a few plays by forwards to block passes/tie up a man who would have been wide open so far against the Ducks.

    And other things.

            Edmonton loses its moral superiority
            By Ian Robinson

When it comes to their relationship with Calgary, Edmontonians enjoy a smug sense of moral superiority.

A recent survey showed that people in Edmonton are more socially conscious than we are.

They care. They care more than we do. About everything. They care about the poor and puppies and criminals and the environment.

Edmontonians tend to believe in sharing, rehabilitation for scumbags and global warming. Calgarians tend to believe in economic reality, punishment for criminals and that global warming and the Kyoto treaty is a scam hatched by European socialists to transfer money to the Third World.

I do think it's safe to say citizens of both cities love puppies. Unless somebody offered a Calgarian a bunch of money for their puppy, in which case all bets are off.

Recently, an Edmonton Sun columnist came down here -- no doubt driving a fuel-efficient Smart Car and drinking something foamy from Starbucks -- hung around for a day and in print derided Calgarians as money-hungry, Charles Darwin-worshipping hustlers who'd willingly step on a street bum's face on our way to a steak dinner.

And I, like most of us, thought: What's your point?

I'd mention the columnist's name, but I met him once and he's about nine feet tall, looks like he can bench press 300 lbs. and eat nails for amusement and I don't want to annoy him anymore than I already have.

Another survey showed while both cities boast a huge number of citizens with post-secondary degrees, Edmontonians tend to have majored in such things as English literature, philosophy and social work.

Calgarians have post-secondary degrees in applied arts, engineering and science. So if you want to know how things really work, you go to Calgary.

If you want somebody to analyse a sonnet, you go to Edmonton.

The best thing to do about Edmonton is ignore it, but its most recent offence against us cannot go unremarked.

Until the Flames broke our hearts -- again -- we were in the playoffs. Because we were in the playoffs, we decided as responsible adults that the best thing to do after a winning game was to go down to 17 Ave. -- the Red Mile -- get high-school drunk, remove clothing to the point of illegality and taunt the cops.

After we were unceremoniously removed from Stanley Cup contention and the Edmonton Oilers moved on, the focus moved to that frozen city on the prairie.

Edmontonians, of course, in their well-established moral superiority, would not embrace celebratory nudity, debauchery and violence the way Calgarians did.

Oh no. 'Cause they're better people in Edmonton, aren't they? Just ask 'em.

After one game, Edmonton Police Service spokesman Jeff Wuite said: "Police on the avenue estimated 30,000 people hit the street, but we only arrested three people and handed out around 60 or 70 tickets. We had 12,000 more fans on the street Monday and only needed to make three arrests.

"Edmonton knows how to celebrate responsibly."

This after Calgary cops had to make 12 arrests and an officer needed stitches after being hit with a broken bottle.

Before another game, Edmonton police Insp. John Visscher said: "We don't expect fans to disregard the law here. Edmonton's tasted the Cup five times already ... so we know how to act."

Business association executive Shirley Lowe said: "Edmonton doesn't want to emulate Calgary's Red Mile. We've had five chances to do so during these playoffs and nothing has happened. We know how to celebrate responsibly."

            Yeah. Right.

After Wednesday's 2-0 win over the San Jose Sharks, the Edmonton cops had their riot squad out.

Women flashed breasts. Fireworks were fired at the women flashing their breasts, another indication Edmontonians aren't that swift. A Calgary woman flashes her breasts, the average Calgarian isn't going to fire pyrotechnics at them.

The average Calgarian is going to take digital photos and post them on the Internet.

After the previous Friday's home game against the Sharks, bottles flew through the air.

One man was hit in the face. Some 50 rowdies were arrested, somebody threw a pool ball through a police vehicle's windshield, a man was beaten to the point where his skull was fractured and two people were stabbed.

Good luck with that moral superiority thing, folks.

We'll have to buck that trend if we are to win.

This team really needs some rest. They tried to take it during the last 10 minutes of the third and you saw what happened.

****ing lucky is all I have to say.
