33 yo shortstop, 12 years in the league, we will see if he makes it to 3000 hits. otherwise, no way is he a hall of famer.

i mean, he hasnt even been MVP or even close. does he have a batting title? im not sure. and those gold gloves cannot be counted since its well known that jeter is at best an average ss defensively.

now manny on the other hand, with pedro, clemens, three more red sox in the hall of fame.

jeter will get his plaque in monument park tho, along with bernie (another guy who probably wont make hall of fame)

btw, why does the ny crowd demand a curtain call after every play, including routine 4 - 3 putouts?

All this from a Red Sox fan. Of course you don't think Jeter is a HoF'er. You hate the guy.

No, he hasn't been an MVP. The closest he came (or should have come) was 1999, which was a monster year. I don't think he's won the batting title, but that's pretty meaningless. Gold gloves don't mean jack. I mean, seriously, Manny Ramirez has one!
Jeter is a mediocre to poor defensive SS, despite making some pretty spectacular plays here and there.

I think he is a HoFer (he'll get in b/c the media loves him, but that's not the point). The point is that he is one of the best SS's to ever play, and he's got a good playoff record (though not as good as some would have you believe, it's still damn good).

            ...

            Manny - yes
Clemens - clearly, first ballot no doubter
Pedro - yes, for sheer nearly unbelieveable peak dominance 1999-2000, as well as a very good overall career value.

            ...

4-3 putout? Cano got a curtain call or something? Huh?

Do NOT underestimate the power of being considered the Yankee "leader" during a span of World Series Champions.

He'll get into the HoF, even if he falls short of 3000 hits. He'll be pretty close though, if he doesn't actually hit the number.

There ain't a doubt in my mind that he gets in. Hell, if Puckett gets in, Jeter is getting in if he retires tomorrow.

Puckett was such a mistake. Ugh.

I think Jeter will end up with ~2800 hits, but he does have a shot at 3000. His numbers will be excellent but the truth is that if he played for another team he wouldn't be talked about the way he is now (as a guy who will most likely make the Hall). I think THAT, however, would be a mistake because people need to remember that this is a SS, not a 1B.

I love that he's my team's SS, either way.

Bingo. He plays in the biggest media market in the country, for a team that won a number of Championships and he was an integral member of those Championship winning teams. That gives him a good deal of a boost.

Though, he is a pretty good player himself. Crappy defense (though average last season), but he hits really well for a SS (remember his OPS+ is just about the same as Ernie Banks', who was lauded for his offense). He has great OBP numbers. He doesn't hit many HRs, but he can take a walk and hit a decent number of doubles.

He isn't as good a SS as A-Rod (offensively or defensively), but he's already got the media on his side. It doesn't matter to argue whether he deserves it or not, if he's on the borderline stats-wise, his popularity will easily vault him over (I wouldn't be surprised to see him with over 80% of yes votes on his first ballot).

Bert Blylevyn (sp?) was a pitcher. Derek Jeter is a shortstop. Also, Bert will most likely end up in the Hall. His case is pretty strong.

Bernie is the one who won't make it. He's actually not that bad a candidate, but he fell apart. If he'd managed to stay productive for a couple more years, I think he had a shot.

                                Sounds like it .

I think the fact that Bernie Williams is actually being TALKED about for the Hall of Fame (won't get in though), is indicative of the New York "bounce". He has way too few hits, too few HRs. Decent OPS+, but not enough to offset how much he misses the big number marks by.

                                Power of the NY media.
