A woman that has been basically brain dead for the past 15 years. There's an opposition between the husband (who wants to unplug her) and the parents (who wants to keep her "alive"). The issue revived the euthanasia issue in the US. Some courts agreed with the husband. But Bush is trying to rush a law that would specifically prevent her from being unplugged.

Yesterday Keith Oberman had a very short piece about who is paying for all these lawyers, for Both sides. At this point the husband has gotten legal help form the ACLU and a few like minded law firms- he has probably gotten several hundreds of thousands of dollars of free lawyers.

The parents have been represented by a variety of right-wing and right to life groups, and they have probalby provided millions of dollars worth of legal help to this family. The parents have spent more because they are the ones making endless fillings and bringing lawsuits.

Oh, and no suprise, the Supreme Court has denied the parent's appeal to them. This is the 5th time the SC has said rejected hearing this case.

            Fifth?

I guess the only thing left is Jeb's attempt to snatch custody. Ruling was due by noon, haven' t heard anything.

I doubt that will get anywhere either- its a blatant attempt to undermine the courts- its beyond transparent.

I wonder if Jeb Bush would send the National Guard to save Terri.

Frankly, I wouldn't put it past some of the more, ahem, "activists" out there to try something ill-informed if and when their last judicial/legislative channel is slammed shut.

It would be ironic if blood were spilled over this.

Bush's attempt was denied by the Florida court just now. Looks like we may finally be nearing an end to the legal options for the Schindlers. Hopefully this mess will be over soon.

                        • State judge has refused to entertain Jeb Bush's request to shift custody of Terri Schiavo to the Florida Dept of Social Services. As far as I can tell, thats the end of the legal stuff.

                          Now its just a deathwatch.

                          • And in some less traveled hall in the White House, darkened and guarded at both ends, eggs are passed out to the henchmen.

Painted eggs. Easter Eggs. Eggs of the Resurrection. Some to display at deathwatch sites. Some, for the homes and cars of the Florida judiciary.

                              • I jump right into this debate without even logging into Apolyton for 2 weeks, and without reading any previous post, so excuse me if I repeat what someone might already have said.

If I were her parent, I would demand to feed her myself. If her husband doesn't like it, he should get a divorce. Even if she's close to a vegetable, dying of thirst might be very agonizing. If the court want her to die, her death should be quick and painless. The current decision is the worst possible.
