My take is this. She's in PVS - she ain't coming out of it. For all intents and purposes, she is dead, and keeping a feeding tube in her is a waste of money, time, and resources.

That said, if the husband is willing to spend the money, that's fine. Likewise, if the parents are willing to spend the money, that's fine as well. The parents shouldn't expect the husband to continue paying the medical bills if he doesn't want to, nor should the state (and vice versa, of course).

It seems to me that the reasonable solution is for the husband to simply seek a divorce. Under Florida law, that would, as I understand it, put the decisions (and financial responsibility) on the parents. If they - and NOT the taxpayer, as MtG points out - are willing to and can pay the bill to keep her "alive" (and I use that term loosely), then so be it. I personally think that's cruel, ESPECIALLY if we assume that the religious beliefs of that family are true and Terri will go to heaven if she dies.

Which brings up another point. If her parents know she is in PVS, and they also "know" that if they simply pull the plug, she will go to heaven and her nightmare will be over, why are they being selfish? That's my question - no reasonable person is claiming that Terri will come out of PVS, including the doctors, so why are the parents so adamant about keeping her "alive"?

Then there's the husband, Michael. Yes, maybe he is acting in good faith, and trying to carry out her wishes. Seems to me, though, that he's at the point now where he should just say "**** it", and get a divorce so the parents can decide (and pay).

I think we can all agree, though, that the federal government needs to stay out of this case.
