Have you even watched the show once?
I watched about 5 minutes of it. Got some glaring plot holes and stuff.

I decided to watch the show after all the talk here and the background info discussed here was a good launch pad.
The show was ok with some good scenes, but 1 thing puzzled me. Jack needed to delay the terrorist to give time for the satellite to track him. So he... holds up the gas station??? Granted he had to think quick, but wouldn't it have been easier and safer to have only car-jacked the terrorist instead (which he did later anyways) or even do something less drastic (flat tire, etc)?
Or was that whole extremity typical of Jack's style? Someone who acts before he thinks and puts more people in danger than necessary, but succeeds nonetheless.
I know the terrorists need the Sec. of Defense alive, but I wasn't buying the whole attempted escape scene either. If the daughter who knows of her's father's medical condition cannot help her father, I don't see why a lone guard would leave his position and go in the cell to attempt to play nurse.
1. robbery was typical. Impulsive Jack, usuallly gets good results, sometimes not, the writers are in danger of making him omniscient.
2. the lone guard doesn't know the medical condition of the guy, so he HAD to check it out, as if Heller died while he was there, before the trial, the guard would probably be killed, wouldn't cha think?
All you realize that Terrorist Mom would sleep with you and then kill you and throw your body away? I think you'd want to stay away from her.

I think the robbery was way overboard. It was a "jump the shark" moment for me. Jack commits a major crime, taking innocent people hostage including a cop! Jack put everything in jeopardy. One single bad move and the bad guy would have gotten away or Jack would have gotten caught or shot by the cops outside. Even as it is now, Jack should be locked up in prison for 20-30 years. Armed robbery with hostages is a serious crime.

You are right. But "good guy feigns health problem so that lone guard checks him out" is rather cliche, don't you think?

Yes, very dissapointed so far. Jack has gone way over the top. In previous seasons it was always because he had no other choice, now it's like the first option.
Knife the tire also can to my mind. But even worse, he had the guys cell phone, dumping it would probably have given them all the info they needed. It's the first thing they do on every other crime show so it's not that obscure.

Knifing the tire could have tipped off the bad guy that someone was following him and caused him to go to an alternate location. But it was still a good option IMO. And the truth is that there was nothing that bad with bringing the guy in for interrogation. Questioning the guy + the cell phone would probably give CTU some good info to find Heller. If they used the drug or the sensory deprivation on the terrorist dude, I am sure they could extract info. Instead, they are using the extreme techniques on some hippie kid who probably doesn't know anything.
Sure, following the guy to Heller is the fastest way to save the SecDef but it is also the most dangerous and risky. Bringing the guy in for questioning would take more time but it probably save the SecDef too.
Let's not forget that Jack's girlfriend is also hostage. And he admitted to falling in love with her. Jack is probably going over the top because he is so desperate to find her. He does not want to lose her like he lost his wife. I think if the show says that this is his motivation, it would make the actions we've seen more believable.

If he had knifed the tire through the tread and not the sidewall, it's not as obvious. A simple poke does the job.
And why didn't jack switch cars after driving away from the gas station. He never slipped like this in the past.
AND more humorous. THE standard CTU kit in the back of the truck has a SKI MASK but not a simple tracer that he could have attached to the guys car.
AND WHY DID HE TAKE OFF HIS MASK DURING THE ROBBERY?
THE WRITING THIS YEAR IS VERY WEAK.
And don't the staff at CTU have more important things to do today without having to worry about all the soap opera crap.
It had better get better. And the new time slot sucks.

I wonder if the writers did the robbery scene strictly to "pump up the action" because they think the audience expects gun waving, gun shooting, yelling, explosions, and car chases every 5 minutes.

Yes, that's probably part of it. It is quite hard to top all the action in last season. It's also why they probably included that lame escape scene, which didn't really add anything to the plot.
Poisoning the tea while Kids look at baby pictures doesn't quite pump up the testosterone.
