Yeah, if you take the trouble to put on the mask, leave it on. When you take it off, hostages might believe that since they've seen your face you plan to kill them. This might tempt you to do something stupid since you think you're going to die anyway. And Jack didn't want that. And the only reason I'm complaining about the weak ass plot, is that it has been so much better and I hold the show to more high standards.

Right before the 3 hour started I told my wife that the over under on how many people jack would kill was 2. I hit it right on the nose.It's almost as if all his overconfident, absolutist assertions were spoonfed to him by a trusted website or subreddit. Sheeple

I think one of the big reasons Jack didn't slash the guy's tires:
There is every possibility that Khalid would have seen him do it! You're a terrorist, you're standing in line to pay for gas (or something), you see some guy approach your car, then walk away. When you come out, you've got a flat tire. Game over--you know you've been made.
I'm not saying a robbery is the only other option, but I don't think messing with his car is a viable choice."My nation is the world, and my religion is to do good." --Thomas Paine

And it's not like a flat tire or hold up the whole gas station were the only options.
It sure didn't take long for the terrorist on foot to find a new vehicle on that road.
Yes, that's convenient.
So if you were one of the hostages (like the terrorist) wouldn't you wonder why a robber doesn't care if people (who he lets live) see his face when he came with means to prevent it? Why even bring the mask in the 1st place?

Whenever I had a flat tire I only had 1 flat tire to change. Jack didn't need to delay him long. 1 flat tire would have been fine.
As far as risks, there seems to be 2 with the flat tire...
1>Jack isn't sly enough and the terrorist can easily see and is watching his vehicle so Jack is seen doing it. Then the terrorist assumes Jack is not an envious vandal/nut, but a high-tech agent without a car tracking device slitting a tire because he needs a few minutes to lock a satellite on him.
or
2>The terrorist doesn't believe he could have ever punctured his tire just before pulling in. And after standing in line and then pumping gas obtain a flat. The flat tire, even after his evasive manuevers earlier, must mean someone is following him without a car tracking device and gave him a flat because they need a few minutes to lock a satellite on him.
Some of the risks for the robbery attempt...
1>Jack gets himself killed;
and/or
2>Jack gets innocent people, like the cop, killed;
and/or
3>The terrorist gets killed or gets away before the car-jacking;
and/or
4>The hostages (terrorist, cop, whoever) successfully stop Jack during the robbery;
and/or
5>The terrorist doesn't believe Jack is a robber due to some/all the questions raised in this thread;
and/or
6>The local police stop Jack.
