        • The new Canal Network is already proving a boon to our industry, and goods are being transported around our realm much more efficiently.

Our latest Iron Foundries will be much improved by this facility, as getting their goods to market is now so much easier.

In other news, the Army is now much recovered, and 15 regiments of Grenadiers stand ready to defend our island. The Royal Navy too, is reconstructed.

We are keeping pace with tecnology, and for the first time, we are not last in cities!

            • I guess that makes me last...

However, after my recent experience I am going for a few biggish cities, full of money and shield producers, and crammed with ships and men!

English are now 5 turns between techs, while producing over 70 gold surplus a turn. My army is also a LOT bigger than it was in 1714!

But well done, because the Dutch are very difficult to play. Your "stay friends with everyone" strategy has paid off so far!

                • The French are pleased to report that the proud city of Paris now is able to churn out one grenadier per turn (not that we need to as the French Royal Army currently has 75 regiments of grenadiers in it ).

The French would like congratulate the the English one thier superb sience abilities, we only get new techs every 6 turn ourselves

France also congratulates the Dutch, we salute you're succes against the wild sioux savages!

(John actually you and Chris has the exact same amount of cities, 30)...

                      • Gosh, that French standing army must be expensive to maintain!

Still, as half of them are in America, I guess they get their poor colonials to foot the bill!

Anyway, not much to report, as England expands her industries....

                          • Peace with the Souix for now.

You guys misunderstood, I said I wasn't last, that didn't mean that Britain was, I meant I was tied with England.

My Sci-rate is behind, at 7.

Republic really hamstrings Holland in this scenario.
It takes forever to make anything, because defenders and Farmers take away percious shields from a very limited amount availible.

John, you really should allow woods to give a little food, they did historically by way of hunting.
The way the scenario is, it's impossible to have a village in a forrest, and it takes farmers a LONG time to terra-form terrain.

One idea might be to make farmers (not colonists) free food support units, at least for Holland, to give them a fighting chance.

                            • Food in the forests....

                              Chris,

I hear what you are saying, but the reason I have chosen to do things the way I have is:

                              1) Expanding colonies in the New World should be hard. Even as hard as I have made it, just look at what Holland, France, Spain and England have colonised in North America by 1735! Much more than historically, and cities like Boston are larger than Newcastle....

                              2) Send your Farmers from Europe, or support them from cities there. It's more realistic, and better gameplay.

Having said that, Holland is in a worst case than most. The Republic form sure hamstrings them. Which is why, in SP, they are the only nation worth playing for a real challenge after you have understood the basics of the game.

And look what you have achieved in Holland, despite those disadvantages! Your very success undermines your arguments...

I would say that you are STREETS ahead of the rest of us, given your starting position, and Hollands actual historical performance.

(..Followed after some way by France, Spain almost neck-and-neck with the froggies, and England a long way last...)

                              • Oh, and in the forests, there are some food resources, but they are few and far between. Even with Native help, the colonists weren't great at hunting, and such methods could only support smallish settlements, before the game became too scarce.

It needed systematic agriculture to expand these settlements seriously, and that is what the game tries to reflect.

Colonies II did it your way, and whilst I admit some people prefer that version... I don't!

However, feel free to make your own modpack for this, and try playtesting it. I might even help you...
