I'd rather have a Grand Dragon from the KKK elected than a closet racist. It makes it much easier to figure out who to kick out of office when they're open and honest about their policies rather than deceptive about them.
I'm talking about foreign policy. Who do you think would produce better diplomatic results, all other things being equal?
Official A who doesn't think much of the countries with which she is dealing but spends vast amounts of time reassuring them and helping them sell an unpopular alliance to their people.
Official B who doesn't think much of the countries with which he is dealing and says, "you better be on our side, or else; you better be with us, or you're irrelevant; here's some money, be on our side - who cares about your electorate;" and, my favourite, "we don't need any allies anyway."
Diplomacy in the US means something totally different than everywhere else in the world.
US diplomacy are cruise missiles and aircraft carriers, everywhere else uses traditional diplomacy.
And traditional diplomacy is the the art of saying "Nice doggy" until you can find a stick.

Because the people in Alberta have quaint antedeluvian right wing attitudes which aren't shared by the rest of the country.
They are also culturally different: e.g. Toronto has a Film Festival, Montreal has a Jazz Festival and Calgary has a Stampede.
You forgot about the Banff Film Festival.
And Montreal's Just for Laughs is better than their Jazz Festival. Jeez, what kind of Canadian are you?
And the Stampede isn't really a Stampede. It's basically a supersized State fair. Lots of rides, big-name musical acts performing for free, etc. There's also a world-class Rodeo and stuff, but no one pays attention to that.
And just don't talk about Alberta culture. It's actually culturally identical to almost everywhere else in western Canada, even central Canada (excluding Quebec). You're playing off stereotypes.

I'm confused by what you mean by diplomacy.

Only under Bush II. Madeleine Albright was much more skilled.
US diplomacy are cruise missiles and aircraft carriers, everywhere else uses traditional diplomacy.
And it's worked wonderfully don't you think? I mean if they had been prepared to be more flexible they probably could have had most of what they wanted without much trouble.
And traditional diplomacy is the the art of saying "Nice doggy" until you can find a stick.
No - it's not having to resort to the stick unless you have to. If you have to that's fine, but why do so when you don't need to.

I would kill myself if I were ever forced to line dance.
Having said that some of those Calgary cowgirls look built for speed. If only their morals were as loose as their shirts.
The Stampede is basically an excuse to goof off. Tons of people wear hickish cowboy hats and flannel shirts and cowboy boots and stuff, but it's all in fun. Yee-haw!
