Like so many conquerors throughout history. Ever wonder why China is still Chinese despite being conquered by Turks, Mongols, and Manchus. Why did the Germans adopt the Roman language and religion and eventually, the name? Normans and Vikings became English.

I can't believe you are ignorant of history, Mark.
Alexander, after conquering Persia, took a Persian wife and declared himself to be Persian as well. It was a historic event, which showed how tolerant (and smart) Alexander was.
OH... and Machiavelli also says you should do exactly that .

I think we've done pretty well for ourselves in the last 135 years, to go from a backwards British colony to one of the group of seven economies.

Actually I see Alexander and the Macedonia of that time, a bit like Bismarck and Prussia.
One of the many Greek nations of the time reuinted the other greeks under its rule, and then turned outside to foreigners.
Macedonia at the time was a region populated by Greeks, but Greece was not united, just like Germany and Prussia of the 1860s, Prussia was one of the many German states, which eventually conquered/united all of the others (same thing about Savoy and Italy). The only difference is that that happened 2500 earlier, and that the other Greeks were not so willing of giving up their independence in the name of a "greater Greece"
