The FOPGians seem to be a sad and pathetic lot given thier lack of recent accomplishments. Let them have thier delusion that Alexander was FOPGian. If they prefer a comfortable lie to the truth, who are we to judge.

the only sad thing around here is your troll moneypenny.

On the contrary I think we have managed rather well considering our size and where we came from.

You only need to look at the state of our neighboring countries to see how we fared.
Albania, FYROM, Bulgaria and Turkey. I'd say we live far better and have progressed much more than them.

      Through struggles of course.

And yes we do have a glorious history too.

I refrain from making a troll about Americans since they are currently the laughing stock of forums worldwide

Yep Demosthenes. Great orator. Alexander was pretty much pissed.

Kind of like Chruchill, only in Demosthenes case his Hilter won. (Macedon)

Alexander's overrated, it was Philiph and the General
staff and tough Macedonian people that conquered
            Greece then Asia.

Alexander was a brave soldier in leading his men in
battle, he would have been a sergarent if not for his
            royal birth.

Don't you think Alexander deserves a say?

              Well here's what he said:

              Men of Athens...
              Had I not greatly at heart the common welfare of Hellas I should not have come to tell you;
but I am myself Hellene by descent, and I would not willingly see Hellas exchange freedom for slavery....
If you prosper in this war, forget not to do something for my freedom; consider the risk I have run,
out of zeal for the Hellenic cause, to acquaint you with what Mardonius intends, and to save you from
being surprised by the barbarians. I am Alexander of Macedon."
              (Herodotus, The Histories, 9.45)

No **** he said he was Greek. But the Greeks of the time didn't agree.

He wanted the Greeks to stop fighting him and help him fight others.

I think what this thread proved is that it's not Canadians who don't know Greek history; it's Greeks.

Oh yeah he was Greek. There's not a shadow of a doubt about this.

"The country by the sea which is now called Macedonia ... Alexander I, the father of Perdiccas (II),
and his forefathers, who were originally Temenidae from Argos."
                      (Thuc. II, 99, 3 )

But Demosthenes wanted to discredit him as "barbarian"
so that Athens wouldn't lose its hegemony over Greece to Macedonia.

It's called desperately clinging to some semblance of greatness when your civilization's been in decline for the last 2500 years or so.

imagine yourself conquering a foreign nation. the war is over, you've won. and you decide to adopt the foreigners' nationality so that they stop fighting you(even if they have stopped fighting, since, you know, you've just won)?????
