Like I think it's irresponsible to make a career in the army while having family you can't blame someone who got conscripted - you can't choose.
How about coal mining, construction, working in an oil or chemical refinery, or sewer plant? There are all sorts of jobs that somebody has to do which have relatively high levels of inherent risk. Hell, have the wrong genes and eat too many hamburgers, and you could kick off prematurely.

These people died while being part of the leading edge of human science. At least they died doing something, and achieving something of value to humanity. Risk is a part of life. Unnecessary and frivolous risk is irresponsible, but there are a lot of other kinds of risks, and somebody has to have vision and try to advance our state of knowledge and technology.

          Perfect MTG.
          especially mining and highrise construction.
Most miners don't have the skills for other jobs. If they weren't mining they'd be making quite a bit less money in a more Safe job. Yet they're willing to take the extra risk so their children can have something better in life. That doesn't smack of shelfishness to me. They're willing to put their life on the line to further help their children. Sound's like heros to me.

            sorry.
            These are not heros.

Heros are the mothers and fathers who sacrafice to feed and take care of there children.
Work two jobs and neglect their own health so there children are given a chance for an education.

I cant see calling these astronugts heros because they had something to prove themselfs and the world.
They thought there egos were more important than there own children.

Yes obviously not. He agrees with me and then tells me my priorities are confused. Just who is confused here?

If he believes it... nothing anybody says will change his mind based on what he has posted... so why bother continuing this. If he is trolling, you are all playing into his hand...

Doc, you might want to just shut the holy **** up right here and now. Willie McCool was an old friend of mine.

You don't know **** about much of anything, least of all the motivations of Willie or the rest of the Columbia crew.

At various times, I've had the privelege of meeting four astronauts or former astronauts, and getting to know a couple of them to at least some extent - selfish and egotistical aren't words that fit any of them.

Brains, heart, intensity, and a passionate belief in the value of what they were doing, yes. Egotism and selfishness, you're just plain ignorant and putting your own prejudice on it. Or just trolling in the worst possible taste.

I believe you are correct; he is just trolling, trying to piss everyone off. Look at the way he wrote the original post.

I am not shocked by this tragic event that has occured over the skys of my home state.
Not the first won't be the last.
what I find disturbing is the fact that these parent atronughts were so rapped up in there personal gratifcation that they were not thinking about there children.
What parent would ride a rocket to the sky with small children at home.
These parents who put there own intrest before there children get no symapthy from me.
Most of you will have no idea what Im trying to say unless you have children of your own.
Any loss of life is tragic. These parent astroNAUGHTS knew the risk and still put themselves before there children.
Oh well, this is how I feel.

I'm sure the astronauts would be completely against you Doc. I'm sure they are going into space not only for their children, but for all of humanity's children. Space exploration is going to be a significant part of humanity's future.
