Well where do you start with Barley? Where do you end?
He's terribly cross about middle-class, white English culture becoming "watered down". However the only example of this culture he provides is afternoon tea- an Indian custom that English colonials adopted (along with curry) and exported back to Britain. Nice one, Barley! Shooting yourself in both feet there, weren't you?
Still, don't let that put you off. Ladies and Gentleman, please study, if you will, a day in the life of Barley.
"Every morning I awake to the song of a noble English robin. Such a proud, patriotic little bird, not like those nasty swallows, cuckoos and songbirds that swarm in from Africa, spreading their foreign muck and disease. I lie back under my stiffly starched blankets (no nasty Scandinavian duvet for me!) and think about the good old war years. Then I switch on my wireless, carefully avoiding all that beastly negro rock and jazz, and tune into a brass band station.
I eat my white bread and marmalade breakfast and peruse the "Daily Mail" carefully. Then I stroll out past the Morris Dancers and stout, ruddy-faced peasant scum and stroll off to work. With any luck I won't have to misfortune to encounter the working classes today. My Bowler hat firmly wedged on, and my suit in traditional scratchy cloth (no frightful Scottish tweeds for me!).
Perhaps I'll take some leisure today. It's got to be golf, hasn't it? Football and Cricket are all about breaking down the class barriers, and we can't have that, can we? Besides, the teams are full of coloureds these days. At least the golf club keep the riff-raff out.
In the evenings, I dine heartily on boiled ham and potatoes, washed down with a lovely warm ale, followed by a helping of suet pudding. Then the whole family assemble round the wireless to listen to more brass band music, and talk about the Queen until our ****ing jaws drop off."
I do apologise. I genuinely tried to make that funny but writing it was like spending a million years in the 1950's. It was sucking the life out of me. Thank God we've got a cosmopolitan culture.
Golf is Scottish, not sure we can tolerate that. Bloody Celts.

It's all crap, isn't it? The mindset of these Little Englanders is "Yes- we'll have all the nice bits of your cultures, as long as we can delude ourselves that they're English really. We still don't want the darkies, though."
Bunch of tossers. Parading virtues is good, but if the only quality you possess is ignorance it's just not worth it.

Sounds like this town has greater problems than race. Both sides seem to be blaming their problems on race though. When different racial groups live together is always an "us and them" mentality. I think the majority of people judge others as individuals without looking at their race, but there is always a small minority who do judge others based on their race. Unfortunately too much gets blamed on them.
