Like a dog humping your leg, it is better if you let the causists finish. They get angry if you interfere with their circle jerk.
I could see limited air strikes to take out the nuclear reactor and the enrichment sites but that's about it. There will be no invasion because they don't have the forces to occupy both Iraq & Afghanistan, maintain their various other duties, and invade Iran.
We would actually go to war for Iran. I like how people say our military is on the verge of collapse even before we mobilized from a peace time footing.
Significant casualties eh GePap. Since when was 1000 over two years out of a total of 6 million under arms in the same time equal significant casualties? I think what you are looking for is DAMN LOW casualties.
"The DPRK is still in a state of war with the U.S. It's called a black out." - Che explaining why orbital nightime pictures of NK show few lights. Seriously.

I wouldn't say the Atlantic Alliance is dead, or even close to death. It did suffer a serious blow with the disagreement over Iraq, but both sides of the Atlantic seem to agree with the idea that the wound should be healed (now, will they be willing to make the affort to that effect, I don't know).
Heck, Bush will meet Chirac soon during his European tour, as well as Putin. The EU has expressed its wish to rebuild a diplomatic bridge. Now, that may be all talk, but even this talk is widely different from what was said two years ago.

Germany and France can inflict more world opinion damage on the US than anyone else except for Britain.
If the UK openly disagrees then you know **** has officially hit the fan.

Britain won't slap the hand away anytime soon. They might not actively support Bush in his next aggression, but they won't dispute the necessity of a geopolitical cooperation with the US. And they'll continue to provide peacekeepers.
The US has a real interest in having France and Germany board the same boat once again. Currently, the US is stuck because its troops are peacekeeping in Iraq - a job for which they aren't made, and a waste fo resources that could be better used bombing some other country. If France/Germany take a part in the peacekeeping job next time (it won't happen in Iraq anymore), the US will save precious resourses.

You're assuming the Yanks give a **** what the French feel since 1960. They don't. The Republic proved it's worth in the 60's, and that was not much.
Germany might smart a little, but it isn't going to disuade the Yanks from anything they want to do.
As far as needing the support of a country that never lent support, no matter what, and a country that is constitutionally bound not to lend support. 'So what?' was loudly heard to echo around Capital Hill.
You have a seriously deluded impression of the place of France, Germany, and the EU in the world.

There is absolutley no force on earth that can beat us, and that is not questioned. But if you can't understand the practicality of what people think about a cause and the people behind it, I can't help you there.
