Ned,
Yushenko is ultra-right motherf*cker. He is a thousand times more a nazi than French Lopen is.
This really makes no sense on its face. Yanukovych is labeled center-right by the Western Press, is in favor of keeping Ukranian troops in Iraq, is backed by the Communist Party, is pro-Moscow and apparently favors the status quo on the president's powers, which resemble the US president's powers.
Yushenko is labeled a pro-West liberal by the press. Serb calls him an ultra-right Nazi. The socialists back him. He will pull Ukranian troops out of Iraq -- which IS consistent with being a socialist. He favors weakening the president's powers to give more power to the legislature.
That's all I know about these folk's politics. It doesn't make much sense.
Minestery of internal affairs of Ukraine initiated two cases against supporters of Yushenko. The first one is about takeover of building of Shevchenko's National University (article 341 of criminal code of Ukraine - takeover of state's buildings and constructions). The second one is about attempt of takeover of the building of president's administration (article 15- attempt of commission of crime; and article 341 mentioned above).

The West is obsessed with keeping Ukraine out of Russia-led alliances. This is a fact. This is considered extremely important. Whatever contradictions may recently have surfaced between western countries, there is a solid consensus in the West on this particular issue.
That's funny, because the last time I heard of Ukraine before the election, was during the Olympics each time they got a medal in some sport I was watching... I don't remember having ever seen Ukraine merely mentioned in my media since then. It sure shows how obsessed my society is toward Ukraine
