The Guardian: Nato is a threat to Europe and must be disbanded
The dictum that an organisation is defined by its most base members is an often used rightwing canard. Islam is a case in point. Thus instead of fruitlessly repudiating that sort of mentality, I choose to take note and apply it in reverse- so as to broaden the discourse.

I definitely think we, the US, should "streamline" our alliances to include only a very select few countries that would both like to have are help in case of attack, and are willing participants in US security as well. Europe may be chaffing at US dominance of NATO. We, in turn, have had it with so-called allies opposing and undermining US security.
I agree, only I think our streamlined alliance should include allies that can pull their own weight, say Russia, Japan, and/or Mexico.
The rest can pay an annual "protection fee" to be our ally.
Hmm, wasn't there another prominent world power that had lots of foreigners in its military... France? Nah, just the Foreign Legion. Legion! That's it, they had legions...

You kind of wonder about that when you report to your first squad and you're the only native born American. My first squad had 3 Mexicans, 2 Jamaicans, a Phillipino, a South Korean, and some guy from Haiti.

You can't broaden the discourse by repeating the other side's fallacies - you have to invent new ones.
Anyway, you're a human, so you're a member of a Fascist species.
Why can't you be a non-conformist just like everybody else?

If you throw around terms with a special meaning for anything that remotely reminds you on this meaning without serious efforts to find out if it makes sense or not you can finally forget these terms.
That is probably true. Just take the social construct of the average kindergarden or primary school class as evidence.
If I could be arsed to, I'd argue that Fascism involves a chiliasm quite alien to your average kindergartener of today.

But only the loony left (i.e. me, Chegitz and the other "usual suspects") really cared about US crimes under Clinton. But now Bush hating is a mainstream thing outside of the US, and has even spread to many avowed conservatives.
All my students hate Bush, all my fellow grads hate Bush (the Americans more than everyone else - one of them used the term "mother*******" the other day, which is the first oath I've ever heard from her), everyone else on campus seems to hate Bush, my thesis reader hates Bush, my arch conservative supervisor hates Bush, the lady at Tim Horton's where I buy a coffee and a donut hates Bush.
Everyone hates him, but not all of these people hate America.
Yeah, them liberal arts grad students sure are a representative cross-section of the population.
All through the Clinton elections and the 2000 election there were stories about this. In academia Clinton/Gore supporters ran 70-80%, among academic faculty it was 90-95% or more. At Dartmouth they got the entire faculty to participate in the poll and there was only one faculty member who said he voted for Bush in 2000.
Your opinions on voting match half the voters, at best. Your hatred of Bush much less than that.

It's a logical argument - no more Warsaw Pact so why have NATO?
I'm personally very annoyed at the idea but I can't really argue with the logic.
Unfortunately the only explanation for this is that Russia still considered as enemy. Not only NATO still exist, but it also grows. How the hell we can be friends if you surround us with your military bases and make this anti-Russian alliance stronger and stronger?
