  • That's true, though - join a church, or even just go talk to them, and they'll probably be happy to help you out. That's the fair way to do it, rather than going on welfare and making others help you.

(not directed at che, just speaking in general about welfare)

      • I dont really care what he does or the politics behind it, just take care and do whatever it takes. I know in his position I'd feel more awkward about going to a church than I would about government.

Oh, you feel more awkward about going and asking for money from those who don't have to give it but do anyway then going to the government and taking some of my hard earned money? Boo-****ing-hoo. I'm sorry if you have to swallow your pride a little, but I'd just as soon keep my money.

          • Well I suppose (and I'm playing devils advocate because economically speaking, I just don't give a ****) you're paying less than you would be if you were contributing to the church fund. Also the taxes you pay for such things are insignificant compared to the proportion of your salary going into Iraq. Beside, the actual amount you pay doesn't change per individual, and in these situations, one doesn't (nor should one in my view) consider society as a whole, rather the situation at hand.

Given the choice between swallowing my pride or going to the government, it's not a tough one .

            • But, have you tried your church? I couldn't imagine your church turning you down.
That was my point earlier on in the thread. You can't consider private charity without looking at friends and the churches.

              • Last night I walked back from... well... an interesting evening , about six miles so only 90 minutes or so, but right past where I got beaten up a couple weeks ago which was rather nerve-racking
You are out of shape, whaleboy.

I can walk 8.5K in about 90 minutes. From UBC to my place in the summer, if I didn't feel like taking the bus.

Maybe, but the church fund is voluntary - I can give any amount I want, from zero to everything.

Also the taxes you pay for such things are insignificant compared to the proportion of your salary going into Iraq.
I oppose the war in Iraq as well. What's your point?

You're right, it's easy - swallow your pride and ASK for help rather than DEMAND help that you're somehow "due".

Che. I've decided. Go to the welfare office and take some of Dave's hard earned money. The feeling of ****ing over the Libertarians should compensate for any bad feelings you might get from dealing with the welfare people.

I note that interesting comment about public transit. For me, the biggest difficulty is that the transit does not run early enough in the day. For me to get to a job first thing in the morning, I need to buy a car, which is a cost I'd rather do without.
When does it begin where you live?

Trains and buses start at about 6am round here, despite the fact that they've given the trains to the bus company.

Sure, go ahead - let's just be honest about what welfare really is and where it comes from, though.
