That's the great thing about Canada. Canadians take for granted that we have different views and most of the time we expect these differences to exist and the fact these differences exist doesn't matter.

Although, I tend to get upset about wannabe Americans, but that's because my greatest fear is that Canada will end up in the future as a USA lite.

Part of me thinks that I should apologise for my harsh comments against the wannabe Americans, but a stronger emotion is don't destroy my country. And yet, the thing I treasure most about Canada is that we are not expected to conform to any myth of a true Canadian.

Oh, I don't know and I'm drunhk.. ah forget it.

        • Calgary is the cleanest major city in the world, and also beautiful.
Major city? Y'all ain't even 1 million people. Yer a podunk compared with the metropolises.

You just get paid more, enjoy far lower crime rates, far lower taxes, and enjoy a lower cost of living.
Aye, I agree with the lower cost of living. Fewer people like living in Calgary.

And it doesn't rain in Calgary 364.9 days a year.
We've had a very good year in the past few years for rain. Now we're paying the piper.

FWIW, Calgary and Vancouver have identical temperatures right now as well. Except Vancouver is raining and Calgary is not.
Yeah, it's been raining for the last few weeks. Raining and cold. It's the worst weather we'll get all year.

Just wait until the arctic front drops, and then we can make a proper comparison.

Calgary is at 1M now...and has been the fastest growing city by far in Canada for many years running now.

Aye, I agree with the lower cost of living. Fewer people like living in Calgary.
Which would explain why it's been the fastest growing city by far in Canada for years in a row, right?

              Silly Ben.

              • Are they moving there because of the climate, and the joys of the city, or because they are looking for work?

Most of my friends from my hometown, they've all moved away to Calgary, because there's no work up north.

And like my usual contrary spirit, I stay in the province.

Many people move to Calgary for the city itself.

The guy I'm renting a room from (a small business owner in Richmond Hill, ON) made a trip with his wife to Calgary a month ago and now wants to move there. He's an avid skiier, business-savy, and finds the mountains breathtaking. He used to live in Vancouver, but found it overcrowded and hates the rain, and the taxes. After Vancouver and before Richmond Hill, it was Montreal. But the economy is terrible there.

Says it all. A veteran of TO and Montreal would find it appealing in Calgary.

As for the regulatory regime, hopefully that will come down, as it has been for the last few years.

                    • Ok

                      Vancouver-- warmer and rainier
Calgary -- more sun but gets colder, better economy and growth

NO suprises. Do we really need to rehash these self-evident characteristics of these cities.

On the opinion, side I love Calgary and Vancouver. Both are beautiful and I enjoy th differences in them. I choose to live in Calgary since thats where the oil industry is but I don't know that I would leave if job prospects were equivalent. ( The low taxes are nice too)

                        • Yeah, I'm not really bashing Calgary either. Especially given the hick phrasing of a so-called Vancouver cosmopolitan.

In fact, I'm not really all that enamoured of the climate in Vancouver. I'd be more suited to Calgary than I am here.

I've got roots here now, so many friends and people that I love dearly, I know I wouldn't be as happy elsewhere.

                          • Both are great cities.

Personally, I'd still be in Vancouver if it weren't for my wife's career. Calgary is too cowboy for me.

Random thought...I wonder how many people from Calgary's Winter 1988 Olympics will be lending a hand for Vancouver 2010...

I don't get the "too cowboy" comment. I could understand if you said "corporate" or "cold" or "conservative" or even "Americanized but other than Stampede time I don't see Calgary as "cowboy" at all.

Dejon where do you live now?

22 years later-- I'm guessing not many-- 22years is a long time and I expect that Vancouver will have legions of willing people
