Yes I can be. Regardless of whether or not a Black man actually committed the crime of whistling at a white woman, he was innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. In addition, the sentence, whipping, castration, and hanging doesn't fit the "crime."

Just because they didn't see the inside of a court does not prove that they were actually innocent of wrongdoing.

The handful of Black criminals lynched pales in comparison to overwhleming nuber of Black people lynched to prove a point, because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, because their business competed with a white man's, or simply because some good ol' boys wanted to have some fun. Lynch law isn't about crime, it's about power. It was terrorism, pure and simple, and anyone who tries to pretend that it was in any way shape of form was justified should be subjected to a lynching.

I own this book -- it's called "Without Sanctuary." You should see yourself how horrific lynching of blacks was from 1880s through the 1930s.

I think I see what you [Cal] mean... although you seem to be mistaken when you say that most people lynched were white. The figure I see cited at most websites is around 4800, 3400 of those black. In which case, given that the population was mostly white, it would seem black people were disproportionately the victims of lynching, which would in turn indicate that the motives were often racist (At best you could say fewer whites were lynched because their peers were more willing to let them get away with crimes).

You seem to be claiming that the only crimes committed by blacks who were lynched were "whistling at a white women". Got any evidence for that?
