I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned

So it was "elijah" that spake that prophecy of whale-related doom? Sweet!! . And I just thought he rose to God on a chariot of fire (Elijah translated not so literally from Hebrew as "rise to god").

So if I kill you, do I become you? Credibility is just a garotte away!

              No, that's Christ.

Still I've always got a chuckle that you were elijah before, and now you are whaleboy.

So true. We had a Kaiser (with moustache!), and of course Bismarck (including pointy hat). Compare this with the clowns we have today!

                        The Sign of Jonah

Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, "Teacher, we want to see a miraculous sign from you."

He answered, "A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a miraculous sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Hence Whaleboy, in the belly of the whale.

But of course the huge fish was sent to keep Jonah on his task, which he was turning away from. And when he emerges, Nineveh is saved through its own repentance, for its own sins. Which is why we recite that book every Yom Kippur. So this is one the NT's more inapt attempts to drash Taanach.

In any case, the generation that left Egypt was sinful, yet saw signs and wonders - so the first line is a bit much, not to mention inconsistent with other NT miracle stories.

No sign, but the sign of Jonah?

That wicked generation also saw the miracles performed by Christ, so he's really speaking tongue in cheek.

He knows the Jews won't get his reference to 'pulling a jonah' for three days, as would happen in his death and resurrection.
