Glad no impacts-- I would hate to hear what you would have to say if your house/apartment fell apart

      • Felt nothing here either, was in class at the time. Didn't even hear any mention of this until I read this thread.

Anyway, the solution to Kid and us other Californians' housing shortage is to allow more development at higher densities. Detached houses have no place in cities.

Yes, I agree. There are solutions, but the real problem is that there is no political will to implement the solutions. Everyone is chasing the dollars. Those will the ability to pay get what they want.

            • Lefty,

Let me show you what happens when you make an assumption based on your prejudice.

You make the assumption that poor people are that way because they are lazy and stupid. Since I have told you my current financial status you label me as stupid and lazy, specifically for having children. What your stupid assumption caused you to do was believe that my financial status was the same 6 years ago when my wife and I decided to have a child. That's when you made an ass out of yourself because my financial status was much better. My rent was about 40% lower and I had a good job.

You make an ass out of yourself when you think you are superior to other people.

              Think about it Jerk!

I still wonder as to your definition of poverty. You keep saying you are in poverty and I wondered what style of living is part of that. Does it involve having enough food? Does it entail living in a house or an apartment?

I will admit to being a bit jaded on the issue since I grew up in Newfoundland Canada ( a poor province with high unemployment) where welfare abuse was almost a sport, it was so common. Also the sense of entitlement was huge as people seemed to figure the governmnent owed them everything. You could see it on the local news where I can remember them interviewing some person complaining about their government-subsidized housing. Whether or not the specific complaint was legitimate I was struck by the fact that the lady was smoking and in the background of the shot I could see a satellite receiver, cd player and soem sort of playstation. Should she have these things? Sure. Just don't expect the taxpayers to pay for them. This type of story was common as were stories of any increase in benefits getting used up by alcohol and tobacco.

                    • Oh and don't go on and on about "inferiority" or "superiority". People are people. But to me that doesn't mean you necessarily get the same size house as someone else.

Every time in these discussions it always comes back to the same premise though. Kid you seem to think that poverty is something that just happens and people are helpless to do anything about it. I just can't accept that in the majority of cases . People have the ability to better their situation either individually or generationally (again with some exceptions).

If you can't pay your rent, and you are an able adult, thats a result of some choices. They may be good choices or bad, its not for me to say. But as an able individual I would assume that you have the ability to earn an income sufficient to support your family. Why do I assume this? Simply for the fact that millions of Amreicans are accomplishing this feat. They, through their own efforts, pay their rent.

I hope that going back to school works out for you and you end up earning a nice income. But whether you earn 30K, 100K or nothing does not change your worth as a person. Neither does the fact that I think you are an impractical idealist with totally unrealistic exectations of human nature and only the scantiest notion of how to implement your half-baked theories.

Yeah, but there's less and less every year and there's a ten year waiting list to get on it in some places.

For the benefit of a non-American, whta is section 8 housing?

I assume its some form of low-income housing but how, generally, does it work?

                          • Section 8 is subsidized housing for people with low income

Owners of the housing rent out to low income people, and the government covers part of their rent which is set based on area averages.

Investors love it because it is gaurenteed rent, regardless of occupancy.

                              Thanks--

we had some similartypes of things in Canada although a lot of the low-icome housing was government owned and the occupants would play income-contingent rents. The problem was that these neighborhoods tended to become a little run down since there was no owner-occupied housing in the area and only a minority of renters would try to spruce up their place ( even in cases where they were there for 10 years or more)

                              • The same thing occurs around here. However, city planners are getting wise to it and try to intersperse the section 8 with other housing types. I know of one section 8 house and one apartment complex in my area, but the rest isn't. The people who live in those places really do not keep them up, and is saddening. I think the idea was that if they saw the rest of the places being kept up, that they would do the same.
