I don't think there's any hate for Howard, just anger that he would go against years of Republican-Tory friendship to criticize Blair and Bush (on an issue of utmost importance to the Bush Administration) for political purposes.

And btw, "leading a concerted attack on Blair" is just offering a contrary opinion. Perhaps you aren't clear how political parties work. I guess when Bush disagreed with the 'nation building' Clinton was doing was not a contrary opinion at all, but leading a concerted attack... I guess our allies in nation building with Clinton should have told Bush that he wouldn't be allowed to speak to them, eh?

Good point, but there is a difference between that nation building and the situation now.

A very stupid message that we'll be petty to anyone who disagrees with us... calling it a 'concerted attack' on Americans everywhere in the process.

As Drake pointed out, this move drives home the urgency of this endeavor. I can see FDR blowing a fuse over the opposition party leader to Churchill making such an attack.

Where did I say I was surprised? All I'm saying is that I understand the motivation for Bush's refusal to meet with Howard and that I don't find the reaction petty. Upon analysis, I find it rather clever, actually.
