no one claimed responsiblity for 9/11. and iirc bin Ladin said he was not responsible (initially way back before the attack on Afghanistan)

Perhaps because they planned to use the planes for 9/11 kind of attack but failed?

Actually, they crashed within 3 minutes of each other. From what I read, they took off fourty minutes apart.

I'm guessing it was probably terrorism, but even if it isn't, the causes of the crashes are almost undoubtably connected somehow.

I must admit that was my first thought as well.

I'm feeling fine, thank-you. A little Serb every now and then helps keep me regular.

It looks like it was a terrorist act after all. This is what I just read on Russian news sites. (This is not official. Reporters got this info from their "sources".)

              1. There was one Chechen female among passengers on each of the two flights.

              2. Those two women have been the only passengers whose relatives didn't show up or even make a phone inquiry regarding their fate.

              3. Whole bodies of all passangers have been recovered except for the bodies of those two women.

              4. The debris of both planes appear on the ground in the following order: fuselage, cockpit, tail. The "normal" order should be: tail, fuselage, cockpit. This can only be explained by an explosion occurring in the tail section.

              5. Traces of explosives have been discovered in the tail section of one of the planes (thus far).

Preliminary conclusion: two female Chechen suicide bombers (one in each plane). They blew themselves up while in the tail section (presumably in the toilet). The explosions were not too strong, so that the bodies of the other passengers were not disfigured, yet strong enough to bring the planes down.

Newsflash: "Islambouli Brigades" of Al Qaeda claimed responsibility. This just appeared on one of the islamist websites.

Haven't heard of that splinter group. What's their primary focus?

I have not heard of this group either. Just seen its name on the news.

And the FSB (Russian FBI) has officially confirmed one of the crashes as a terrorist act. Trails of the explosive hexogen have been found in wreckage of one of the plains.

So looks like it was a coordinated attack...

Well, already we have seen a much better response from Putin than we got from our own leadership. Good for them. Tough time, and a tragic attack, but their leadership is proving up to the task so far.

You have quite an opinion of Putin, Vel! The Russian response is far from perfect, and the attitude is completely different too.
