Lonestar, I just fowarded to my sister your info on the insurance (he was a lawyer, and typically very good about keeping all the paperwork up according to my sister). It helps, she was doing the typical high-speed worry about everything upset. It really helped her out. Thanks.
I'm not sure of it's "real" name. IN the Navy it's called a "Page 13" because that's where it is in your personnel record. I remember when I was in Bahrain briefly before the war began they kept on reminding us to use the free legal service to update your wills and keep the Page 13 updated.
I saw many people just blow that off, which is why I brought it up.

Was she already planning to sell her house or is this because of her husband's death?
My relatives sold my uncle's house right after he died and ended up taking a very low price. They were in shock from my uncle's death and weren't thinking straight.
That's terrible, I'm sorry for your sister's loss, and yours.
Perhaps in time, it will help a little to think that your brother-in-law died while he was trying to make a difference for people who really needed it.

I'm curious as to where and at which base your brother and law was serving. I'd also like to know what his date of death was compared to when your sister was actually informed because the military has been getting flack for taking up to a month to notify next of kin.
I have not heard of family being given the run around on SGLI payments. In fact the military seems to have enough sense to know that reporters would be all of that story like a fly on **** if they didn't promply pay out life insurence claims for soldiers who were KIA. I seriously doubt you will have a problem on that front. As for your feelings for the war, well, I would be tempted to keep them to myself when your sister is around unless you are sure you know exactly how your brother in law stood on the issue. This could be a potential source of conflict and right now you need to be caring and sympathetic towards your sister and that means if either she or her late husband felt differently then you should keep away from that topic.

It's called soldier's group term life insurence or SGLI for short. The maximum is $250k and the Army incourages everyone to register for the maximum amount. That's mainly because they want the maximum amount of monthly payments but if your going to Iraq or Afghanistan maxing it is a wise thing to do. While I was mobilizing for Iraq I know our CO made this a point and everyone in the unit maxed their SGLI.
