Getting drafted or enlisting before they draft isn't necessarily ballsy, its justs giving up to the inevitable. Most everyone during this time period wanted to "avoid" getting sent to Vietnam, the more intelligent ones figured out ways to increase their survivablity like getting into National Guard units.

Then you had the stupid and gutless that just ran off to Canada.

    • I was never happy with Kerry, that hasn't changed. Sure, I'll vote for him over Bush. But I'd have voted for any of the Dems in the field over Bush. Well, I might have abstained had it been Lieberman or Sharpton. Still, there's just no way I'll vote for Bush.

Why Joe Biden isn't on the ballot, I don't know. Maybe he's saving it for 2008, but every time I see him, he looks more presidential. He'd certainly bring the foreign policy credentials to the ticket. If they were going to draft someone else (and that won't happen, folks, let's not kid ourselves), I'd hope it would be him.

When will either party actually nominate/run a centrist candidate?

Excellent point, especially when Bush wasn't even an incumbent and could barely put a sentence together.

Exactly. Not being G. W. Bush isn't going to cut it, everyone in the country who isn't already president qualifies there. He's scared to death of taking a stand on any issue that isn't a slam dunk for him. The dems just seem to have a deathwish. Even Bill Clinton was a sure loser against G.H.W. Bush until the long eared galoot from Texas got into the race in 1992.

                • Ouch, Boris. You weren't implying that Lieberman is as bad as Sharpton, were you?

                  • Lieberman is a sensible democrat, which is almost unheard of now days. But I don't think he has leadership qualities, but he's a fine senator.

Depends on what you mean by "as bad as." That could encompass many things. He's "as bad as" Sharpton in terms of him being someone for whom I'd rather not vote at all than vote for. But for different reasons.

So that was a direct result of Goldwater? If he were alive now, he wouldn't be pleased with his party.
