Uh, Sky, Saudi Arabia doesn't have any freedom to protect in the first place. They essentially have none of our first amendment rights. Saddam Hussein, even if he had invaded Saudi Arabia for some fool reason, wouldn't have been all that big of a change from what I hear.

AuH20 was pro-military, pro-balanced budget and anti-government power. For example, he was against the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1963 because he felt it went beyond the fed's legitimate powers. Someone above says he was against outlawing abortion; while I don't have any specific recollection of his stand on this issue, this limiting of governmental power is consistent with his other stands.

I wish I could find some of his old literature. I'll bet he was anti-corporation, pro-small business; anti-rich, pro-middle class, anti-welfare...but that's just a guess.

He was also a man for great integrity and courage. When the Republicans finally decided Nixon had to go, the chose three members of Congress to convey this to Nixon. Goldwater was one of the three.

I'm thinking about preventing the war crimes that would ensue, not the general quality of government.

However, there's also the bonus of not giving an ambitious dictator control of a large(r) portion of the world's oil.

As for whether Goldwater destroyed the republican party, I think it can only be argued that he did so in the short term.

Which is why che is saying... in the long run, it was a good thing for the party, but only because there was a Reagan waiting in the wings.

Somebody charismatic... definitely someone who could make you laugh, but still commanded respect. In terms of politics, I'd like someone who believes in progressive taxation, someone who believes government should be used to protect the weak and help people, and someone who will crack down on the immense corruption in this country.

Such people don't seem to exist.

I was opposed to the first Gulf war... I was a sophomore in High School... and I opposed it only because I saw through all of the lies. I saw propaganda at face value. Babies kicked out of incubators, awesome patriot missiles, and Bush's New World Order attempts to sell America's soul to the U.N.

You see, I am not left field... I was a John Birch Society member at the time. It was a right wing objection.

Less government, more responsibility, and with God's help, a better world.
