Do you agree with the actions of the Mormon Church?
In performing baptisms for the dead? Absolutely. If you believe in the Church, it is a wonderful opportunity to provide loved ones with the chance to accept the Gospel. If you don't believe in the Church, then who cares what them Mormons are doing?
Well because its insulting.
These mormons are showing no respect for the Jewish faith or the Jewish people by treating them as if they were dedicated Mormons.
Would you participate in a religious rite that marked you as a member of that religion even if you didn't believe in that religion?
The Church would not look highly on that.
We do not dig up corpses and dunk them in the water.
No, but you aren't treating the dead with respect. Thats my point: You should respect the dead. Unless they specifically said they wanted to become Mormon when they were dead, you should not be trying to baptize them.
It just makes Mormons look like the fringe-cult they are.
It's offensive, sure, but I don't see anything really wrong with it. It's not as if they're digging up corpses and dunking them in water or anything. It's a ceremony that only involves the name of the individuals, not any of their personal effects. So it breaks down to this:
1) If the Mormons are right, then they person might get to go to Heaven, which is a good thing.
2) If the Jews are right, then the ceremony won't have any effect on the deceased's soul, so it does no harm.
3) If I'm right, then there's nothing going on after death for anybody, so no harm, no foul.
My question is, why are the Mormons only doing this for the Holocaust victims? Why not just start getting lists of all dead non-Mormons and devote themselves to constant baptism ceremonies of this kind? Seems to me that giving everyone a chance to get to heaven should trump all other concerns...

To improve this analogy, I would participate in the religious rite, then be asked to decide whether or not I wished to accept it and become a member of the religion.

The work is not done exclusively for Holocaust victims. It is carried out for all non-members, hence the efforts and emphasis placed on geneology.

No, you essentially said that Mormons think you can only go to heaven if your baptised and that if another church baptised your dead relatives you wouldn't really care because you dont think its binding....
Conversely, isn't it a little perverted that the Jews are so wigged thinking that if another church baptised their dead kin it would somehow void an earlier contract made with the very same diety?
From what I see, this is just another example of Mormon extremetism. They see it as perfectly fine and right and while theres nothing "morally wrong" about it, its just not respectful at all....Mormons are trying to put a more moderate face on, and this doesn't quite help.
For me its painfully obvious why this would upset anyone who isn't faithful.
It's just like that guy over in Brigham City whos always reading from the book of mormon I'm fine with your religion as long as you don't try to forcefeed it to me.
