If some democrat or anti-bush website had done a cartoon showing Bush looking under the couch and under chairs saying "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere,", how many of you would find it funny?

'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"
G'Kar - from Babylon 5 episode "Z'ha'dum"

Using satire as a criticism is nothing new, compared to belittling your own home-spun policy which led to war....
The latter is about as funny as retarded kids playing in traffic."Perhaps a new spirit is rising among us. If it is, let us trace its movements and pray that our own inner being may be sensitive to its guidance, for we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us." --MLK Jr.

Now if Hitler had tried a joke in which he was hunting unsuccesfully for the certificate of origin which he could not produce (in contravention of his own race laws) with some SS character standing by about to cart him off to the death camps as a result, that would have been truly tasteless.
But, you know, I somehow can't quite envision such as Hitler doing any such thing.
So I sort of like the fact that this guy has a bit of the self deprecatory about him. Whether his taste in giving expression to it is good or bad.
There may be something else to say in his favour. I have been waiting for some time now expecting him to make some further hideous and eye catching move in his "war". But in fact both he and Blair have rather seemed somewhat chastened by the situation over WMD.
If some sign of shame over the Guantanamo situation appeared I think I would start to give a sigh of relief and put the worries I have entertained down to my joining in some of the hysteria that has been going on.
