  • Bush pokes fun at himself at dinner

    http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/....ap/index.html

Bush put on a slide show, calling it the "White House Election-Year Album" at the Radio and Television Correspondents' Association 60th annual dinner, showing himself and his staff in some decidedly unflattering poses.
There was Bush looking under furniture in a fruitless, frustrating search. "Those weapons of mass destruction have got to be somewhere," he said.
The stupidity of that statement can be forgiven. The arrogance of that statement is unfathomable.

Well, I view things in the context that Bush was affected quite a bit by two very emotional events. First, Saddam tried to kill his dad and second, the 9/11 attacks. We would all like to think that a president could detach himself emotionally when discharging the duties of his office but the vast majorioty of us would have been overwhelmed by the responsibility Bush faced.

Add in the fact that he was clearly surrounded by hawks and you can see why he choose the plan of action that we have been following.

I believe Bush to be a good man who has made some mistakes. Most of us, in the same situation, would have probably acted in a similar way.

Any arrogance you may detect is that of a man who is acting on his convictions. IMO.

That is unbelievable. People died for his little "search."

Imagine that, a president with a sense of humor and some posters without.

                It's outrageous, like Boris said.

That "joke" is a slap in the face to the family of every soldier who has died so far in Iraq. Poking fun at one's self is great, but this crossed the line into a tasteless joke about a critical issue. First they lie about WMD, now they have the gaul to make jokes about them? Outrageous, indeed.

Highlighted properly by his opponents, this could be a major problem for his electoral hopes.

That would require the Democrats to be competent campaigners.

I have no problem with any of it-another non-story. This is as absurd as that scrap about Kerry's off-the record mike moment.

The comedy value is not so high, but then, most self-effacing pols. aren't that funny.
