      • I can maybe go from Hawaiian to Japanese, or vice versa.

Although the Japanese would probably be a "dialect" and not official.

        • Well, that beats me.

I only speak English and Indonesian. Well, I also speak Minangkabau, but I don't even know anybody in real life who speaks that, let alone on Apolyton.

My parents both teach Indonesian and they used to run a summer program in West Sumatra. It's not too hard to pick up if you already speak Indonesian, because the grammar is very similar and there are a lot of cognates.

                    • Sweet.

My Japanese is pretty choppy and "westernized". My grandmother would kick my a** if she heard me butchering it now.

That's pretty awesome that you can speak Indonesian. Is Minangkabau a dialect of Indonesian, or an entirely separate language?

I know that Micronesian, Melanesian, and Polynesian are all similar and I wonder if Minangkabau is part of this family...... Maybe derived from Palau or Truk?

I probably don't remember correctly, but I think the languages of eastern Indonesia (like Maluku or Irian) are part of the Melanesian family, whereas the languages of western Indonesia (Acehnese, Minangkabau, Batak, as well as Indonesian itself) are part of the Malay family.

All those languages actually are separate from Indonesian. Most people in the regions still speak the local language as their first language (eg. Minangkabau in West Sumatra, Batak in North Sumatra) and have to be taught Indonesian in school.

And, as if it wasn't complicated enough already, there are also different dialects of Indonesian in each regions. I'm used to Padang's Indonesian (though I've been told I have a Jakarta accent ) and it's sometimes quite hard to understand people from Jakarta. The slang terms are especially difficult at times.
