If what would have happened is pure speculation, why do you feel you are the only one with the right to speculate?
Sans loss of 100,000,000 people, multiple wars of genocide, colonialism, and add peaceful trade? Don't get me wrong, I suppose they might have gotten nuked or something at a later date. But when bad things don't occur, one can safely assume that the recepient is better off.
I'm consitently stupid- Japher I think that opinion in the United States is decidedly different from the rest of the world because we have a free press -- by free, I mean a virgorously presented right wing point of view on the air and available to all.- Ned
Obviously this is more speculation. That's what we are both doing.
err, no, that's historical fact.

Ah, yes, b/c europeans created everything that was ever worthwhile in a geopolitical vacuum.
I never said any such thing.
They never engaged in trade with byzantines, arabs, chinese, or africans (in the early days when there were powerful african empires).
One might suppose that Scandinavians would never have developed these institutions either, since they had to encounter franks, teutons, angles, saxons, bulgars, and slavs and copy their methods 1st.
This is the whole point. Without contact with others, sub-saharan africa likely would have languished as it had for eons before.

What about Zimbabwe, then?
The black majority kick the white farmers out, and their country is going to hell in a hand basket. They'll be starving soon enough.
What's yer point? Is it that blacks are inferior to whites, or that despots don't make great leaders?

Obviously this is more speculation. That's what we are both doing. That was the intent of my original "it would be a pretty safe bet" comment. I speculated that a safe bet would be that things would stay the same. All you've done is dismiss it because it's speculation while hinting that you think things would have been different. So when I speculate it's wrong to speculate - when you speculate it's ok.
What you still fail to see is that I don't speculate about Africa's further development without colonization in this thread - I never said this or that would happen there.

Your view of history is so obviously one-sided. You act as though NOTHING good came of european colonization.

Contact would have occurred inevitably- actually it had already occurred, it had just languished for awhile during the wars with the arab states. This is peaceful trading/tech diffusion vs. genocidal enslavement we're arguing. Which do you think would be better for the africans?
And answer my friggin question(1st one)!

No... just another example of where Africa has been better run by foreigners than the natives... along with the obvious example of S.A., of course.
I can't think of any sub-saharan country where black leadership has made an outstanding contribution, in fact.

It was good for the europeans, but I fail to see how it benefitted the africans.

Caligastia, as you show yourself to be utterly ignorant of African history, I suggest you are not able to be a useful part of this "debate." If we applied the level of knowledge you are displaying to European history I could some it up this way. White people slaughtered white people and for a thousand years Europe was a barbarian backwater.
