I think there certainly was an impact, and the older generations attitude is shaped much by the colonial times, however, the cultural belief of white being best was something the brits exploited .. rather than caused. It just made so much sense, that in a society where fair people have the power and the influence, a white race of people, with technology far beyond there own, were gods/sent by god, and were naturally superior.

However, far from blaming the brits, I think you will find you can indeed blame the Greeks

It was Alexanda the great, who conquered parts of northern india, and many of his soldiers took wives and stayed ... no surprise at all that South Indians are darker skinned, and northern Indians lighter ..

Yes, external being greek influence. That was not ment as a detour .. it was historically correct, the greek influence on North India is quite amazing, it transformed the culture and religion, many of the Hindu gods are infact greek gods .. Durga carry's a trident !!!!

Colonialism re-inforced this I agree, but by accident rather than force. Accident of culture, because the British ruled by class .. and in India, the upper classes were infact fairer (or percieved to be).

in the last 50 years, I would say TV has polerised the issue even more, showing adverts of magical skin creams designed to make you fair, or miracle cures .. etc .. only recently has this been regulated.

Interesting this about the Hindu gods. My knowledge only went as far as Afganistan and the Afgani tribe of Kalas which speak a language which ressembles greek very much. Actually many of the words are identical.

However, I'm not arguing who's to blame although I think you're a bit underestimating the role of the british colonial yoke, I'm stating that this was an external influence which caused this. A very abhorent external influence if judging by the result but an external neverhteless, a point I think we've already agreed upon.

It is sad Laz that the pigmentation of our skin plays such a role in the way others around us treat us .. but nothing has changed over the centuries, and so im hopeful we can survive and learn to laugh at those so aflicted with this hatred.

In India, if I am treated differently (which is unfortuantly all the time), I insist on not being so .. education is the way forward.

I went out with my brother in-law for a hotel lunch, and the waiter asked me if he could bring any water for my driver .... can you believe it .. he can't even drive a car. That kind of thing will change, as mixed familes increase .. and I fully believe that mixing is the way forward !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You pitty differences, or react to them just as much as every one does. Cali and I only acknowledge differences. People who do not acknowledge differences are generally shocked when things change or when a difference is made known.

I don't think anyone said that pigmentation should play a role in the ways other treat us, but the sad truth is that it does. White, black, yellow, or brown, racism is not a isolation problem as many subjected to it would have one believe...

External influences produce those abhorent results you describe and they are confined to specific places and are explained by specific historical facts. Were you to come to other places you'd simply be viewed as quick and easy money.

A man from India seeing you and your brother in law and making that assumption is only a testament to the immense damage this country has received.
