There seems to be some hypocracy here: Christian groups, for years and years have been criticizing violence in movies... but they're just gushing over this one.

Saved me a post.Are you guys really this dense? Christian groups haven't been decrying violence of all kinds in the media; they've been decrying the glorified and consequence-free potrayals of violence that permeate modern actions movies and video games. There's a huge difference between that type of violence and the type of violence portrayed in "The Passion."

I like how it's been judged by so many who have yet to see it. I think some people are going by ideology more then review of a movie.
The violence in this case is historical, and I think needs to be done in order to fully realize Jesus' ordeal and the consequence of our sin.
From the NY times review I've read, It seems that the last hour is nothing but a 'Jesus chainsaw massacre' where any other person would've died three times over.
What's the point? We know He suffered horribly, but I don't like having my face rubbed in it under the guise of "historical accuracy".
