Massachusetts High Court rules same-sex couples entitled to marry

People celebrating this ruling should think twice. They were asking if a civil unions type deal would be allowable, a compromise measure. Now, Massachustes has only two option: amend the State Constitution to make marriage defined as something between a man and a woman, or accept gay marriage. The State was leaning towards the former before, this ruling will likely force their hand.

Might as well amend the constitution. That's what it's going to take.

If that is the trend opposition to gay rights may climb even higher after this ruling.

It's one thing when it's theoretical. Entirely another when people have to deal with the consequences.

But I think it would lead to a big Dem win in November, and the Repubs aren't willing to take that chance.

Who votes? Dems may have a wider base, but the Republicans vote.

Bush weighs in on ruling

"Marriage is a sacred institution between a man and a woman," Bush said in a statement. "If activist judges insist on re-defining marriage by court order, the only alternative will be the constitutional process. We must do what is legally necessary to defend the sanctity of marriage."

More election year grandstanding from politicans. The BS is really flying these days...

Note the characterization of judges as "activist" (translation to bushspeak = secular). Marriage is first and foremost a legal contract. Secondly it is a religious ceremony. Bush wants to combine church and state, or at least he wants his Christian constituency to believe that. If Bush is so concerned about the "Sacred" nature of marriage, why doesn't he have a problem with drive-thru marriage ceremonies in Las Vegas?
