  • He left because he never fully healed from the effects of the Morgul Blade wound, nor the effects of the Ring.

The Scouring of the Shire was left out. Let's just say, someone ends up at the Shire that wasn't supposed to be there.

    • Scouring is when the hobbits get back to the Shire and realize that things have gone to crap.

There is another view on this. He left because he was a Ringbearer. You will notice that in the appendix the Tale of Years hints that Sam may have left Middle Earth as well, because he was the last surviving ringbearer.

I guess the idea is that bearing the ring changes a person such that they are "magical". Since the whole story of Lord of the Rings is based around the idea of magic and elvishness leaving the earth, presumably he leaves for Valinor where such things are appropriate. Once a person has been "magicked up" they no longer fit into Middle Earth which has by the fourth age, become the realm of men. For example, Aragorn is the last of the Numenoreans, the Edain, the elf-friends. These were men who associated with the elves to such a degree that the magic rubbed off on them, leading to a longer life and a higher form of culture. Of course, it's doomed, because elves were never supposed to stay in Middle Earth, and those that did either failed to obey instructions or were rebels who left and were exiled.

Gimli is supposed to go as well. I'm not quite sure what that means.

I'd forgotten that. I can't remember where that is stated.

              • Well in Appendix A of LOTR, the Line of the Dwarves of Erebor, speak of Gimli leaving with Legolas, and Galadriel obtained grace from the Eldar to allow him to come along.

That's right. I'd forgotten. And people think that hobbits would look out of place in the fair city of Tirion.
