      Back to the topic

I'm not moved by our anthem in general, but it also depends on circumstances. In very proud moments, such as won championships or so, it can have an effect.

From a music point of view I like the US anthem more than ours, also the lyrics.

Ming - do you feel moved when the US anthem is played? Open yourself.

I do like our anthem. When it is sung properly, anyway (rare noawadays, it seems).

Which other anthems besides the Star Spangled Banner describe an historical event?
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Yeah, everyone always seems to mutilate the national anthem by adding add lib woohoos... Ussually done by black folk to, though any stupid pop singer knows how to destroy it. The best singers of the NA? Hewy Lewis and the News

I think the reason Americans still get emotional over that anthem is that we are good at realeasing patriotic propegandan movies at regular intervals...

I just watched Gods And Generals... Dang that was a long movie, but it was really good... Learned a lot about General Jackson

I've not heard Huey Lewis sing it.
I imagine he would do a good job.

Marc Anthony, is that someone's name?
He sang at the Cowboy game and did a good job.
Had hearing aids, it looked like.

                    I prefer the Internationale.

Seriously, "This Land is Your Land" is a much better song. Gotta love Guthrie. That ought to be our national anthem.

Yeah, it may not be the hardest thing in the world to play or maybe even sing, and it ain't no Puccini, but if that were so high school marching bands and britiney speers would never be able to perform it!@

It's too hard to sing, that's the problem. It requires an unusually wide range for an anthem, and engages in far too many musical leaps. That's why it's prone to be butchered so much in performance.

It's just not a great piece of music, that's all. Passable, yes. It's uplifting through association, but unremarkable in and of itself.

I've always thought the tune from "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" would make a stunning national anthem. Bach is hard to beat!
